Fifth-Ranked Gettysburg Schools Profs in Second Half

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – After getting beat 7-6 on draw controls and leading by just four at the conclusion of the first half in its non-conference contest with Rowan University, the Gettysburg College women's lacrosse team, ranked fifth in NCAA Division III by the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA), won the first eight draws in the final period and played lockdown defense, holding the Profs to just five second-half shots en route to a 17-6 victory on a rainy Saturday afternoon at Clark Field.

Gettysburg (6-0) never trailed in the contest, but Rowan (1-2) knotted the game at 1-1 on a Tori Hart goal at 21:28 in the first half. The Bullets responded with four goals by four different players over the next 12 minutes, including the last by senior Megan Moore (Chestertown, Md./Gunston Day School) at 8:09. Moore continued her assault on the Profs' goal with three more goals before the end of the period, each following a Rowan score by less than a minute to give Gettysburg an 8-4 edge heading into the break.

After playing a fairly even game in the first 30 minutes, the Bullets opened the second half by dominating the draw and breaking Rowan's clear attempts. Gettysburg won nine of 12 draw controls in the period and allowed the Profs to set up their offense just six times in 14 clear attempts. Sophomore Jessica Crane (Sudbury, Mass./Lincoln-Sudbury) jump-started the offense with three consecutive goals, while classmate Hollis Stahl (Hightstown, N.J./Peddie School) came on for a three-goal run of her own to push the host's lead to an insurmountable 14-5 with under 10 minutes to play. The Bullets added three more goals, including two by senior Cristi Farrell (Broomall, Pa./Academy of Notre Dame), to polish off the victory.

Crane led the Gettysburg offense with four goals and one assist, while Moore and Stahl tallied four and three goals, respectively. Senior Katie Ceglarski (Darien, Conn./Darien) notched two goals and two assists and is now just two points shy of 200 for her career. Senior Jamie Giffuni (St. James, N.Y./Smithtown) dished out a team-best four assists, while Callie Gates (Basking Ridge, N.J./Ridge) tallied one helper, five ground balls, and five caused turnovers.

The Profs were led by Lauren Crennan's two goals and one assist. Caitlin Meseroll tallied one goal and one assist, while Kerry O'Donnell contributed defensively with four ground balls and three caused turnovers.

In the goal, sophomore Kristen Krammer (Woodbine, Md./Glenelg) improved her record to 4-0 by stopping 10 shots. She was also the beneficiary of the Bullets' swarming defense, scooping up 15 ground balls on the day. Her counterpart in the Rowan goal, Alicia Mannino, made 10 saves and picked up six ground balls.

Gettysburg, which has won 12 straight home openers, held the advantage in shots (37-22) and ground balls (32-26) and committed fewer turnovers (25-21). The Bullets were consistent on their clear attempts each half and finished 17-of-20 overall, while Rowan finished 12-of-26.

Next up for Gettysburg is a non-conference meeting with Messiah College at Clark Field on Wednesday, March 12, at 4:00 p.m.
