Tigers Top George Washington to Stay Undefeated

TOWSON, Md. – Junior midfielder Hillary Fratzke (Queen Anne's County H.S./Centreville, Md.) scored a team-high four goals, including three in the first half, as Towson University (4-0) extended its win streak to four straight games with a 12-9 non-conference victory over George Washington University (0-5) at the Tigers' Johnny Unitas Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Fratzke, who has scored 10 goals in the last three games, also had four draw controls in the victory.

After the teams traded goals three times in the opening 14 minutes of the first half, Fratzke gave the Tigers a 4-3 lead with her third goal of the game, scoring on a free position shot with 2:06 remaining. However, the Colonials tied the game at 4-4 with 1:11 remaining when sophomore attacker Mia Breheny (Bishop Ireton H.S./Alexandria, Va.) scored her second goal of the period past senior goalkeeper Mandy Corry (West Essex H.S./North Caldwell, N.J.).

George Washington jumped out to a 6-4 lead early in the second half on back-to-back goals from Breheny and senior midfielder Kristin Karsch (Bishop Shanahan H.S./Kennett Square, Pa.), forcing Coach Missy Doherty and the Tigers to take a timeout.

Following the timeout, the Tigers went on a five-goal run in just under two minutes to take a 9-6 lead they never relinquished. After Fratzke scored her fourth goal of the game with 23:14 remaining, junior attacker Meggie McNamara (Fayetteville-Manlius H.S./Fayetteville, N.Y.) tallied a pair of goals just 18 seconds apart to give Towson a 7-6 edge.

Freshman midfielder Ali Lathroum (Stephen Decatur H.S./Bishopville, Md.) and sophomore midfielder Lauren McAfee (Moorestown H.S./Moorestown, N.J.) added goals in an eight-second span to extend the Tiger advantage to 9-6 with 21:21 remaining in the game.

Following a Breheny goal with just over 12 minutes left, the Tigers added back-to-back goals from juniors Brianne Minor (Penn Yan Academy/Penn Yan, N.Y.) and Britt Woodfield (South Carroll H.S./New Windsor, Md.), upping the Tiger lead to 11-7 with 6:57 left.

The Colonials closed to within 11-9 with a pair of goals from Breheny and sophomore midfielder Taylor Donohue (Radnor H.S./Villanova, Pa.) before senior attacker Kendie Bauer (Fallston H.S./Fallston, Md.) ended the scoring with an unassisted goal with 2:15 left to give the Tigers a three-goal advantage.

While Fratzke led the Tigers with four goals and an assist, McAfee added a goal with a career-high three assists in her first start of the season.

"[McAfee's] been doing a great job on the offense, so we wanted to make sure that she saw more playing time," Doherty said. "We switched our midfield rotations around today and put Mac up top. She went in and did a great job for us today."

Breheny led the Colonials with five goals and an assist while Karsch added a pair of goals with an assist. With her two-goal effort on Saturday, Karsch moved into third place on the George Washington all-time list with 90 career goals.

Towson outshot George Washington by a 34-30 margin and held a 16-7 advantage in draw controls.

The Tigers will travel to Johns Hopkins University on Wednesday evening for a 7:00 p.m. game against the Blue Jays at Homewood Field.
