Providence, RI – Sophomore Meghan Markowski (Northport, NY) scored four goals in the game's first 20 minutes, helping the Brown women's lacrosse team (2-3) out to a 9-1 first-half lead in an eventual 15-8 win over Stony Brook (2-2) on a rainy Saturday afternoon at the Berylson Family Fields.

The Bears saw their lead swell to as many as nine goals at 10-1, but five straight Seawolf goals made it a game again at 10-6. However, the Bears responded by scoring five of the last seven goals to close the game, including two each by junior Jesse Nunn (Worton, MD) and sophomore Kara Kelly (Garden City, NY). Leading the Bears in the field was junior Lauren Vitkus (Skaneateles, NY), who had team highs with eight draw controls and seven ground balls. Sophomore Kiki Manners (North Potomac, MD) led the Bears with two assists, as five other players chipped in with one.

For Stony Brook, Diana Caroleo had three goals and an assist. Goalkeeper Mickey Cahill also had a solid game despite allowing the 15 goals, as she was able to stop 17, helping the Seawolves pull back within four.

Markowski keyed the Bears' 4-0 run to start the game. She scored her first goal 29 seconds into the game, adding another at 3:39, then followed a goal by freshman Alexa Caldwell (Middletown, MD) at 5:22 with a goal on a free position shot at 10:08. Stony Brook finally got on the board at 18:43, but the Bears scored the final five goals of the half, including Markowski's fourth of the game, the first career goal by freshman Krissi Penikis (Swarthmore, PA), and scores by senior Justine Lupo (Ridgewood, NJ), Vitkus, and Nunn.

Caldwell scored again 1:03 into the second half to give Brown a nine-goal lead, but Stony Brook chipped away at the lead over the next 13:19, drawing to within four with five goals, including two by Samantha Djaha. However, Kelly scored twice, once off an assist from Markowski and then on a free position shot, to get the lead back up to six. Nunn followed with a goal with just under 10 minutes remaining, and after two Caroleo goals for the Seawolves, senior Ali Holland (Garden City, NY) and Nunn scored in the final minute for the 15-8 final.

After playing three of their first five games at home, the Bears will hit the road for their next three. First up is Hofstra on March 15, as the teams will tangle on Long Island at 1:00 p.m.

Providence, R.I. (March 8, 2008) – Brown's Meghan Markowski scored the first two goals of the game as the Bears never trailed and went on to defeat the Stony Brook women's lacrosse team, 15-8. Stony Brook drops to 2-2 on the season while Brown improves to 2-3. Senior Diana Caroleo (North Babylon, N.Y.) had three goals and an assist to lead the Seawolves.

Markowski scored the first three of Brown's four goals to start the game as it opened up a 4-0 lead with 19:52 to go in the first half. Caroleo finally got Stony Brook on the board, scoring an unassisted goal at the 11:17 mark. Markowski answered back with her fourth goal of the game and the Bears scored four straight goals to take a 9-1 lead into the locker room.

After Brown scored to make it 10-1, the Seawolves' offense came to life. Stony Brook scored five straight goals to cut the Brown lead to 10-6 with 15:38 left to go in the game. Freshman Samantha Djaha (East Islip, N.Y.) had two goals in the span and junior Kaitlin Leggio (Bay Shore, N.Y.) capped it off with a unassisted goal.

Kara Kelly scored two of the next three goals for Brown before Caroleo tallied two goals to cut the Brown deficit to 13-8. Brown tallied two goals with under a minute to seal the win.

Stony Brook is home on Wednesday afternoon for Sacred Heart. First draw control is scheduled for 3:00 pm.
