Manhattanville Rolls Past Dominican for First Win

PURCHASE, N.Y. Cory Alcorn (Orangeville, Ontario) scored five more goals and Abbe Grimes (Hamden, Conn.) chipped in four goals and two assists as Manhattanville built a 14-1 lead and coasted past Dominican (N.Y.) 15-6 at GoValiants.com Field, winning for the first time under Head Coach Anna Riordan.

Alcorn scored six second half goals in the Valiants season opener Thursday night at Western New England and picked up right where she left off in Saturdays home opener, bookending a game opening 5-0 run with a pair of goals and scoring twice more before intermission. The senior now has 124 career goals and moved into sole possession of fourth on Manhattanvilles all-time scoring list with 165 points.

The game was still in doubt midway through the first half when Silje Carlson put the Chargers on the board with 10:32 left before the break, but Alcorn scored twice in a 19 second span minutes later and the Valiants finished the half on another 5-0 run to build a 10-1 halftime lead.

Manhattanville buried Dominican in the first six-plus minutes of the second half and coasted through the final 20 minutes to hand the Chargers in their second season as a NCAA Division II program to their first loss of the year. Karlsen and Amanda Matos each scored a pair of goals for the visitors in a losing effort.

Grimes, who scored 48 goals in both her freshman and sophomore seasons, scored only once in her 2008 debut Thursday but rebounded to lead Manhattanville in scoring Saturday. Grimes third goal, which gave the Valiants their 14-1 lead, was the 100th of her brief career. Kirsten Spelman (Lynbrook, N.Y.) and Katie Bertel (Colorado Springs, Colo.) each added a pair of goals for the Valiants, with Emelda Ogweta (Portland, Maine) and Colleen Holahan (New Hyde Park, N.Y.) also adding single goals.

The Valiants out-shot Dominican 38-19 in the game, including a 28-6 edge in the first half. Manhattanville also scooped up 20 ground balls, led by four from Alcorn and three each from Holahan and Darby Webber (Walpole, Mass.). Freshman Kirstin Betsill (Parkton, Md.) made eight saves in the cage for her first career win.

Manhattanville (1-1) is scheduled to return to the field Thursday at 6:00 p.m. against Mount Saint Vincent. Live Gametracker coverage of that game will be available at www.GoValiants.com
