No. 10 Roanoke Blows by St. Mary's (MD)
St. Mary's City, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland men's lacrosse team dropped their second straight on Saturday afternoon with a 14-6 setback to No. 10 Roanoke College in non-conference action.
After the first 15 minutes of play, the Maroons (2-1) owned a 6-1 lead behind a hat trick from sophomore attackman Matt Quinton (Elora, Ontario, Canada) and two from junior midfielder Benjamin Sultze (Acworth, Ga./Fort Collins). Freshman attackman Chris Becraft (Rockville, Md./Good Counsel) notched the lone goal for the Seahawks.
St. Mary's (2-3) kicked off the second frame with three straight goals from three different players to pull within 6-4 with 6:43 remaining in the first half. However, junior midfielder Chas Carlson (Cockeysville, Md./St. Paul's) led a 3-0 run for Roanoke with a pair of goals to give them a 9-4 advantage at halftime.
A goal by Becraft at 8:26 had the Seahawks trailing 9-5, but two Maroon goals in a 49-second span put Roanoke up 11-5 after three periods of action. The Maroons outscored St. Mary's 3-1 in the last stanza to claim the 14-6 victory and their second consecutive win.
Quinton and sophomore attackman Pat March (Glen Burnie, Md./Mt. St. Joseph) both finished with a game-high five points as Quinton notched a game-high four goals and an assist. March had a hat trick and a pair of assists. Sultze finished with a hat trick as well.
Roanoke outshot the Seahawks, 43-29, and won the ground ball battle, 41-31. Senior middie Bill Cameron (Salem, Va./Salem) won 8-of-11 face-offs for the Maroons as Roanoke won 14-of-24 as a team. Junior attackman Adam Ariosa (Parkton, Md./Loyola Blakefield) notched a game-high five caused turnovers, while sophomore defenseman Stephen Simmons (West Friendship, Md./Mt. St. Joseph) had a game-high six ground balls.
Becraft was the only multiple goal scorer for St. Mary's as he tallied a hat trick and an assist. Junior long-stick middie Brian Wallace (Landenberg, Pa./Avon Grove) led the squad with a game-high six ground balls and four caused turnovers.
Sophomore Jake Dorsey (Woodbine, Md./Mt. St. Joseph) made nine stops and scooped up four ground balls in the victory. Freshman Pat Simpson (Arnold, Md./Broadneck) gave up five goals and made no saves in the game's first 14:04 before being relieved by freshman JJ Strombosky (Westford, Mass./Rivers) who recorded 10 stops and nine goals against in the loss.
St. Mary's will return to action next Wednesday, March 12 when the Seahawks face Swarthmore College on neutral ground in Florida at noon.

Billy Cameron led the Maroons with five groundballs and won 8-of-11 face-offs. Stephen Simmons led Roanoke with six groundballs. Cameron passed Ben Love '06 for third in career groundballs with 324.
With the score tied 1-1, the Maroons scored five unanswered goals to take a five-goal lead at the end of the first, 6-1.
In the second quarter, the Seahawks scored three unanswered goals, two with a man-up to pull within two with eight minutes remaining in the half.
The Maroons pulled away in the second half, scoring seven of the next eight goals to make it 13-5 to secure their second-straight win.
