Goucher Rolls Past Presidents at Homewood Field

TOWSON, Md. - The three starting attackmen for Goucher combined to score 14 goals in leading the Gophers to a convincing 21-6 victory over Washington & Jefferson today at Homewood Field.

The win provided the Gophers with their first 3-0 start to a season in the 17-year history of Goucher's men's lacrosse program. Sam Fitzpatrick and Adam Pietrocarlo tallied two goals apiece in the opening period, which ended with the Gophers leading 7-1.

Fitzpatrick added two more goals in the second quarter, including one with :01 showing on the clock, as Goucher was ahead at halftime, 11-2.

Pietrocarlo collected his fourth and fifth goals of the contest in the third period and Fitzpatrick concluded his five-goal five-goal, three-assist performance with an extra-man goal and an assist on an even-strength goal by Casey Hughes in the fourth quarter. Hughes, the third starting attackman, supplied the Gophers with four goals and a pair of assists.

Russ Kalkstein had a hand in four goals for the Presidents (0-2), scoring three times and picking up one assist.

BALTIMORE, Md. – Adam Pietrocarlo and Sam Fitzpatrick both scored five goals as Goucher opened an 11-2 halftime lead and cruised past Washington & Jefferson, 21-6, in men's lacrosse action on Saturday evening at Johns Hopkins University's Homewood Field.

The Presidents (0-2) scored the game's first goal 2:42 into the contest as senior midfielder Russ Kalkstein (Baltimore, Md./Loyola) found the back of the net.

The Gophers (3-0) then took control from that point with eight unanswered goals. Pietrocarlo and Fitzpatrick both scored a pair of goals in the first quarter.

Junior attacker Zach Devilbiss (Taneytown, Md./Francis Scott Key) ended the Presidents' scoring drought with a goal at the 13:10 mark of the second quarter off an assist from Kalkstein, but Goucher ended the half with three more goals to claim an 11-2 lead after 30 minutes.

The Gophers led 15-5 after three quarters and poured in six of the final seven goals in the fourth period.

Casey Hughes added four goals and two assists for the Gophers, who held a 48-21 shot advantage. Goucher also held a 49-38 ground ball edge and scored on 3-of-5 extra-man opportunities. Eight different Gophers scored during the win. Austin Main turned back five shots in the first half to collect the win in goal.
