Hartford Hawks Fall to Harvard

WEST HARTFORD, CT – The University of Hartford lacrosse team suffered an 11-2 defeat against Harvard University on Tuesday afternoon at Al-Marzook Field.

Hartford (0-5 overall) struggled to find the net, scoring once in the first quarter and again in the fourth. Sophomore Justin Bearse and freshman Leif Abrahamson each scored for the Hawks while freshman Michael Cudmore picked up an assist. Jason Duboe led Harvard (3-1 overall) with a hat trick while Matt Hull, Jesse Fehr and Travis Burr each added two goals apiece.

Duboe scored his first goal just over two minutes into the contest, though Hartford answered right back behind Abrahamson to tie the game two minutes later. The goal would be the Hawks' last of the first half, as Harvard scored two more times in the first quarter and another in the second. Duboe scored all three of his goals in the first half as the Crimson led 4-1 at the break.

Harvard added the first four goals of the second half, including a pair by Burr in the third quarter. Trailing 8-1 heading into the fourth quarter, Hartford netted its second goal when Bearse took a feed from Cudmore with just over seven minutes remaining in the game. The Crimson closed the game with three straight goals, including the final two by Hull.

The Crimson held a 32-16 edge in shots and scored on its only man-up advantage of the day. The Hawks failed to score in three extra-man opportunities.

Joe Pike made 10 saves in goal for Harvard and played all but the final four minutes of the contest. Freshman Lee Malandrino made his first collegiate appearance in goal for the Hawks, starting and playing all 60 minutes. He finished with seven saves.

Hartford will next play at Quinnipiac on Saturday, March 15 at 1:00 p.m.

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. - Five Crimson players collected multiple points as the Crimson scored seven unanswered goals en route to an 11-2 victory over Hartford Tuesday afternoon at Al-Marzook Field.

Jason Duboe led all scorers with three goals, while Travis Burr, Jesse Fehr and Matt Hull each found the back of the net on two occasions. Freshman Dean Gibbons, meanwhile, had a career-high three points, including a goal and two assists.

Harvard grabbed a 1-0 lead two minutes into the contest, as Duboe tallied his first of three unassisted goals on the day. Hartford (0-5) managed to tie the game with 10:47 remaining in the first quarter on a goal by Leif Abrahamson. The Crimson netted two scores later in the first and added a tally in the second to take a 4-1 halftime lead. Duboe scored two of those Harvard tallies, while Fehr grabbed the other goal. Duboe and Fehr are now tied for the Crimson season lead with seven goals apiece.

In the third quarter, Harvard continued its scoring streak, earning four more goals to take a commanding 8-1 lead after 45 minutes of action. Fehr tallied the game's only man-up goal 0:43 into the third, as Gibbons collected an assist on the play. The Crimson scored two goals within 12 seconds of each other, as Burr scored with 7:08 to go in the third, followed by a Gibbons tally with 6:56 remaining. Burr capped the Harvard scoring in the quarter with another even-strength goal in the final minute.

Hartford ended the Crimson scoring streak with a Greg Gilroy goal midway through the fourth. Harvard added three insurance goals in the remaining minutes of regulation to complete the scoring. Matt Hull netted two of those goals, his first two tallies of the season.

Harvard's Joe Pike stopped 10 of 12 shots, and Evan O'Donnell saw his first action of the season for Harvard, facing no shots in five minutes. The Crimson was 1-of-1 on its extra-attacker chances, and was a perfect 3-for-3 on the penalty kill.
