Eighth-Ranked Bowdoin Romps over Southern Maine
BRUNSWICK, Maine -- The Bowdoin College women's lacrosse team recorded its highest goal total in eight years with a 19-1 victory over the University of Southern Maine on Tuesday afternoon. The Polar Bears (2-0), ranked eighth in the latest Division III poll, have outscored their first two opponents by a cumulative score of 34-3. Southern Maine (0-1) dropped its season-opener.
The Polar Bears excelled offensively and defensively in their final game before leaving for three games in Florida. Bowdoin scored the first 11 goals of the game in a span of 21:36 to open the contest. Rookie Katy Dissinger (Upper Brookville, N.Y.), seniors Lyndsey Colburn (Concord, N.H.) and Ali Draudt (Portland, Ore.) and first-year Ingrid Oelschlager (Roanoke, Va.) all notched two goals in the opening stanza to give the Polar Bears a commanding lead.
Freshman Mary Vaughan (Brunswick, Maine) netted USM's lone goal at the eight-minute mark of the period to cut the lead to 11-1 at the break.
Bowdoin continued to roll in the second half, scoring on eight of their nine shots in the period. Draudt finished with a career-high five goals for the Polar Bears, while Dissinger scored three with an assist. Colburn (2g, 3a) and sophomore Kauri Ballard (Ridgefield, Conn.; 1g, 4a) each collected five points in the win.
Senior Katie Quartuccio (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) made 10 saves, all in the first half, for the Huskies. Junior Steph Collins-Finn (Menands, N.Y.) made two saves in the first half for Bowdoin before giving way to sophomore Sarah Marston (Charlotte, Vt.), who made one stop for the Polar Bears in the second. Bowdoin held a 20-2 edge in draw controls, including seven from Ballard.
The 19 goals is the most for a Bowdoin team since a May 2000 victory over Bates (21-8). Additionally, the one goal allowed are the fewest since the Polar Bears defeated Southern Maine in March 2004 (18-1).
Bowdoin will kick off its three-game Florida trip playing Skidmore College on Friday (7:30 p.m.) in West Palm Beach, Fla. Southern Maine is off until March 20 when it travels to Colby College.
