Queens Women's Lacrosse Squeaks Past Shippensburg

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (March 11, 2008) – No. 9 Queens University of Charlotte had a scare Tuesday night at the Queens University of Charlotte Sports Complex at Marion Diehl Park against Shippensburg University. The Royals held on to win 12-10 in the non conference game to improve to 6-1 overall while Shippensburg falls to 0-1.

The Royals and Raiders traded goals 2-1 in favor for the Royals for the first eight goals of the game. Ship broke the scoring pattern when they scored goals nine and 10 making the score 6-4 with 9:12 left in the first half. Queens scored two more in the half and Shippensburg notched one to end the half 8-5.

The scoring slowed for both teams in the second half with Queens scoring three goals in the first 18 minutes of the half. Amanda Mahle (Baltimore, Md./Bryn Mawr School) scored two of the three goals for Queens and led the team with four in the game.

The Raiders answered with two goals in two minutes cut the lead down to three, 11-7, with 10 minutes left in the half. Queens' Kelley Duffy (New Hope, Minn./Cooper) scored the last Royals goal of the game with 7:42 to go.

The Royals defense led by goalie Rebecca Markle (Hampstead, Md./North Carroll) held off a Raider comeback attempt for the 12-10 victory.

The Raiders outshot Queens 25-19.

Behind Mahle, Duffey scored three and provided two assists. Markle made nine saves, four in the first half and five in the second.

Raider goalie Brooke Miller made five saves in the game. Katie Irwin scored the Shippensburg high four goals.

Queens rests until March 21 when they travel to Erie, Pa., to play Gannon at 7:00 pm.
