No. 12 Georgetown Deals No. 7 Delaware Its First Loss

Washington, D.C. - The No. 12 Georgetown University men's lacrosse team posted its highest scoring output since March, 2002 as the Hoyas stopped No. 7 Delaware, 18-10, on Wednesday afternoon at the Multi-Sport Field. GU improves to 2-2 on the year, while the Blue Hens fall to 5-1. Georgetown is now 7-0 all-time vs. Delaware.

The Hoyas led 1-0 after the first quarter. Delaware took a 3-1 lead in the opening minutes of the second period before the Hoyas went on a 6-1 run to close the second. GU led 7-4 at halftime and following four more goals to start the third quarter, Georgetown led 11-4. The Blue Hens wouldn't get closer than six goals the rest of the way.

Seniors Brandon Cannon (Haverford, Pa./Haverford School) and Andrew Baird (Baltimore, Md./Loyola Blakefield) posted four goals apiece while sophomore Andrew Brancaccio (Bethesda, Md./Georgetown Prep) and sophomore Ricky Mirabito (Binghamton, N.Y./Chenango Forks) tallied hat tricks. The three goals were the first of Mirabito's career.

Cannon also dished out three assists for a game-high seven points. Senior midfielder Dan Vinson (Pleasant Hill, Calif./De La Salle) was credited with winning 11-20 faceoffs after notching just one faceoff coming into the game.

"We did a good job of turning this thing around after a tough loss at Syracuse over the weekend," said head coach Dave Urick. "The guys responded well. Jerry (Lambe) did a great job against their leading scoring (Curtis Dickson) and offensively, we executed well against their zone."

Junior Chris Taylor (Mercer Island, Wash./Mercer Island) recorded five ground balls to go along with two caused turnovers. Senior Miles Kass (Rye, N.Y./Hotchkiss) posted 10 saves.

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The University of Delaware's undefeated men's lacrosse season came to an end Wednesday afternoon as Georgetown scored six goals in the second quarter to take the lead and used an eight-goal third period to take command on the way to an 18-10 men's lacrosse victory in a battle of Top 20 powers.

The No. 7 ranked Blue Hens (5-1), competing with their highest ranking since the 1999 season, suffered their first loss of the season and remained winless in seven meetings all-time with the Hoyas. Delaware was looking to start the season off 6-0 for the second time in three years. The Hoyas also snapped the Hens' unbeaten season in 2006 when the Hens were 7-0 at the time.

No. 12 Georgetown, coming off a 9-8 overtime loss to No. 4 Syracuse Sunday, improved to 2-2 as Brendan Cannon scored four goals and dished out three assists, Andrew Baird notched four goals, and Ricky Mirabito and Andrew Brancaccio each netted hat tricks.

Delaware, coming off an 8-7 triple overtime victory Saturday, got two goals each from Beau Davis, Curtis Dickson, and Tommy Lee with Davis also dishing out assist and Vincent Giordano scored once and adding an assist. The 18 goals was the most allowed by the Hens this season and the most since a 19-18 win over Villanova last April.

Dickson, who entered the game ranked No. 1 in the NCAA in goals scored, upped hit season total to 19 and extended his streak of scoring at least one goal to 15 games. Lee scored the first two goals of his career and also won 8 of 14 faceoff attempts. Goalkeeper Tom Scherr posted 11 saves but allowed 18 goals.

The game was relatively even statistically as each team won 16 faceoffs, Georgetown outshot the Hens 50-45, Delaware held a 33-31 advantage in groundballs, and Delaware's 20 turnovers were three less than the Hoyas. Georgetown did convert on three extra man opportunities.
