James Madison Tops Virginia Tech for Second Win
HARRISONBURG, Va., March 12, 2008 -- Number 14 (Inside Lacrosse) James Madison defeated Virginia Tech 12-8 in women's lacrosse Wednesday evening at the JMU Lacrosse Complex.
The Dukes got their second win on the season in the team's second home game of the year. JMU's record now stands at 2-3, while Virginia Tech dropped to 2-6.
Each team score two goals in the opening 1:51. The 2-2 tie was broken at 8:12 into the half with a goal by JMU freshman Mary-Kate Lomady (Abington, Pa./Abington) to put the Dukes up by one.
The Hokies responded with 12:27 remaining with a goal by freshman Allie Emala (Baltimore, Md./Bryn Mawr) to tie the game at 3-3.
The Dukes then went on a 5-0 scoring run with five different players tallying goals to put JMU up 8-3 at 3:13. Virginia Tech junior Kristy Zeigler (Chantilly, Va. /Chantilly) scored off a free position shot at 1:08 to bring the score to 8-4 at the half.
Each team scored four goals in the second half to leave the final score at 12-8.
The Dukes were led by senior Annie Wagner (Annapolis, Md./St. Paul's/Johns Hopkins) with three goals. Redshirt sophomore Kim Griffin (Jarrettsville, Md./North Harford) and redshirt senior Brigid Strain (Alexandria, Va./Mount Vernon) had two scores apiece.
The Hokies were led by Emala with two goals. Six other Hokies each contributed a goal.
JMU senior goalkeeper Kelly Wetzel (Catonsville, Md./Mount De Sales) made 10 saves, while Virginia Tech junior goalkeeper Kari Morrison (Springfield, Va./Bishop Ireton) finished with 12 stops.
JMU held a 28-21 advantage in shots.
The Dukes' next game is against Richmond at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 15, at the JMU Lacrosse Complex.
