Kirby's Nine Points Lead No. 8 Washington College
CHESTERTOWN, MD -- Senior attackman Kolyn Kirby (Chestertown, MD/Kent County) scored five goals in seven shots and handed out four assists as eighth-ranked host Washington College cruised to a 17-5 win over visiting Elizabethtown tonight on Kibler Field at Roy Kirby, Jr. Stadium. The Shoremen improved to 5-0 on the season with the win, while the Blue Jays fell to 2-2 with the loss.
Washington outscored Elizabethtown, 6-0, in the first quarter and held an 11-1 lead at halftime after outshooting the Blue Jays, 35-9, over the first 30 minutes. Washington held a 57-23 advantage in shots for the game.
Washington's starting attack unit combined for 11 goals and 10 assists as junior attackman Jimmy Kielek (Baltimore, MD/Archbishop Curley), who scored four goals and had one assist and senior attackman Chris Read (Baltimore, MD/Boys Latin), who scored two goals and netted five assists, joined Kirby as the game's top scorers. Junior midfielder Casey O'Connor (Crownsville, MD/Archbishop Spalding), junior midfielder Matt Moreton (Darnestown, MD/Northwest), and senior attackman Mike Sutter (Ellicott City, MD/Mount St. Joseph) each scored two goals for Washington. Josh Dougherty led the Elizabethtown offense with three goals.
The Shoremen won 18 of the game's 26 face-offs as junior midfielder Thayer Damm (Huntingdon Valley, PA/LaSalle) was 12-of-17, senior midfielder Andrew Generazio (Springfield, VA/West Springfield/Bridgton, ME) went 4-of-5, and O'Connor was 2-of-4. Damm's 10 ground balls were a game-high and helped Washington to a 59-25 advantage in ground balls in the game.
Junior goalie Gordon Cohen (New Canaan, CT/New Canaan) made nine saves and allowed one goal while playing the first three quarters for Washington. Junior Danny Walker (Ellicott City, MD/Glenelg Country School) made one save and allowed four goals in 14:55 of playing time before being replaced in the final seconds by freshman Sean Stoerrle (Bethlehem, PA/Bethlehem Catholic).
Elizabethtown also played three different players in goal. Chris Schuch allowed five goals and had one save in 11:26, Austin Hayes made 10 saves and allowed eight goals in 24:53, and Hunter Malick allowed four goals and made six saves in 23:41.
The Shoremen return to action Saturday with their Centennial Conference opener, a 1:30 p.m. game at Muhlenberg.
