Maritime Falls to Green Mountain

THROGGS NECK, NY The SUNY Maritime women's lacrosse team fell to the visiting Green Mountain College Eagles 9-6. Although both teams played with less than the normal 12 players, injuries forced the Privateers to play with only 10 for the game, compared to the 11 for the Eagles. The Eagles are now 1-0 on the season.

Maritime scored the first goal of the game less than two minutes in. Elizabeth Tavolaro (Broadalbin, NY/Broadalbin-Perth) scored her first goal of the season. Only 30 seconds later, the Privateers took a 2-0 lead on Kyle Kenny's (West Nyack, NY/Nanuet) first goal on the evening. The two goal lead stood for 10 minutes, as each team's defense picked up their game and shut down the opponents offense.

Amanda Jeffers cut the Maritime lead to 1 on her first of five goals for the evening. Kyle Kenny answered back for the Privateers who scored the next three goals to regain a 5-1 lead. Jamie Gleber (Wilmington, DE/Padua Academy) scored her first goal of the season during that stretch. Jeffers scored once more, followed by Kenny before halftime, to send the Privateers into the locker room with a 6-2 advantage.

The second half was much different than the first, with the Eagles' defense shutting out the Privateers. Deidre Bailey and Jeffers scored three times apiece for Green Mountain, and Monique Couture scored once. The Eagles doubled their shot total to 18 compared to the first half, and picked up 24 ground balls, while turning the ball over 11 times.

Meagan Golden (Point Pleasant, NJ/Point Pleasant) was in net for the Privateers and made 11 saves. Her counterpart Emma Buckley made 14 saves.

The Privateers will play at home on Saturday at 11:00 AM. Their opponent will be Fitchburg College.
