#19 UMBC Topples #6 Terps on Goal at 0:01 in 3OT

Baltimore, Md. - Sophomore midfielder Maxx Davis' unassisted goal with 1.5 seconds remaining in the third overtime period gave the host UMBC Retrievers a 9-8 win over sixth-ranked Maryland in an intra-state men's lacrosse clash before 2,113 fans at UMBC Stadium. UMBC improved to 3-3 on the season and has won three of its last four games. The Terrapins had a two-game winning streak halted and are now 4-2.

The Retrievers had forced overtime as junior attackman Ryan Smith scored his team-high tenth goal of the season with 5.6 seconds remaining in regulation. UMBC led 7-5 after junior midfielder Kyle Wimer scored his second goal of the game with 4:11 remaining. But the Terrapins scored off the ensuing face-off and pulled ahead, 8-7, with goals at the 2:39 and 1:50 mark. But Wimer found Smith about eight yards away from the cage, and the attackman bounced his left-handed shot past Terp netminder Jason Carter.

Retriever junior netminder Jeremy Blevins made a brilliant save in the first overtime period, thwarting Grant Catalino on a fast break opportunity. The game appeared destined for a fourth overtime before Davis dodged from the a sharp left wing angle and beat Carter with a shot under crossbar.

Davis posted his first three-point game with a goal and two assists. Junior Alex Hopmann posted his first three-goal game of the season, while Wimer added two goals and an assist. Maryland senior Max Ritz , who scored the go-ahead goal for the Terrapins in the fourth quarter, led the visitors with two goals and one assist.

Blevins made 11 saves in nearly 72 minutes of action. Carter had six saves after entering the game at halftime, while starter Brian Phipps had five stops in the first half. The win was UMBC's fourth straight positive decision in overtime after a 3-0 mark in extra time last year. The team travels to Ohio State for a March 22 contest with the Buckeyes.

BALTIMORE, Md. (March 14, 2008) The sixth-ranked University of Maryland mens lacrosse team dropped a 9-8 decision in three overtimes at No. 19 UMBC Friday night at a rainy UMBC Stadium. Midfielder Maxx Davis scored the game-winning goal with 1.5 seconds left in the third overtime to give the Retrievers the victory.

The Retrievers took control of the first quarter right from the get-go. UMBCs Terry Kimener scored an unassisted goal less than two minutes into the game. Maryland freshman Tony Mendes knotted the score at 1-1 after finishing a score from the left side of the crease off of a great skip pass from junior midfielder Jeremy Sieverts. UMBC built the lead to 3-1 before the end of the period on goals by Matt Lathan and Alex Hopmann.

The Terps rallied in the second quarter, scoring the first three goals of the period to take a 4-3 lead. Freshman attackman Grant Catalino scored the first goal of the quarter for the Terrapins, ripping a shot into the upper left corner of the Retriever goal. Sophomore long pole Brian Farrell shoveled in the next goal, following his own shot that was saved by UMBC goalie Jeremy Blevins, but Farrell was able to poke the rebound past Blevins to tie the game.

Redshirt junior midfielder Jeff Reynolds gave Maryland its first lead at the 5:18 mark on a high-bouncing shot from about 10 yards out along the left alley. Hopmann sent the game to halftime as a 4-4 tie off an assist from Kimener with just more than two minutes remaining on the clock.

AQfter a scoreless third period for both teams, UMBC climbed back on top with back-to-back goals by Kyle Wimer and Hopmann. The Terps cut the lead to 6-5 on a goal by Ritz off an assist by senior midfielder Drew Evans. After Wilmer built the lead back to two on his second goal of the quarter, Maryland went on a 3-0 run to take an 8-7 lead with just under two minutes remaining.
