Yellow Jackets Rally to Defeat Maroons

Salem, Va. -- The women's lacrosse team dropped a heartbreaker to Randolph-Macon, 12-11 at Donald J. Kerr Stadium on Friday evening. The loss dropped the Maroons to 3-3 overall and 1-1 in conference play. The Yellow Jackets improved to 1-4 and 1-0 in the ODAC.

In the first-ever women's lacrosse night game held at Kerr Stadium, the Maroons were down 6-4 at the half. Randolph-Macon scored the first goal of the second half to increase its lead, 7-4 just one minute into the second stanza.

The Maroons roared back to score six unanswered goals and took a 10-7 lead with 19:51 left. Brooks Laufman and Gina Valles led the second-half surge as they scored a combined five goals during that span.

R-MC's Lacy Phelps scored back-to-back goals to close its deficit to one, 10-9 at the 15:27 mark. Valles then found Laufman for her fifth goal of the game to put the Maroons up, 11-9 with 13:39 left in the game.

The Yellow Jackets scored the last three goals of the game to steal a win away from Roanoke, preventing the Maroons from their fourth win.

Laufman led the Maroons with five goals in a losing effort. Valles added four goals and a team-high two assists. Paige Mason scored a goals and dished out an assist in the loss.

Emily Kent finished with four goals to lead Randolph-Macon. Erin Claire Cassidy had one goal and a team-best four assists for the Yellow Jackets.

Katlyn Scarlett had five saves for the Maroons while Lindsay Schabert finished with seven for R-MC.

The women will host Catholic on Sunday in non-conference action at Kerr Stadium at 2:00 p.m. The Maroons fell to Catholic, 13-11 in 2006.

SALEM, VA .- Alex Wright's goal with three minutes remaining in the game helped the Randolph-Macon College women's lacrosse team to a 12-11 come-from-behind victory over ODAC rival Roanoke College on Friday night.

R-MC (1-4 / 1-0 ODAC) was led by sophomore attack Emily Kent who scored four goals on the evening, including the first two scores of the game for the Jackets. Midfielder, Logan Pomoroy was next to find the back of the net, followed by attackers, Kelly Cramer and Katie Green, to put R-MC up 6-4 at the half.

Kent scored again in the opening minutes of the second half to put the Jackets up by three at 7-4, but Roanoke (3-3 / 1-1 ODAC) fired back with six unanswered goals to take a 10-7 advantage with 19:51 to go in the game.

Senior, Lacy Phelps, scored back-to-back tallies, bringing R-MC within one at 10-9 before the Maroons scored to go up 11-9 with 13:39 to play.

The Yellow Jackets got a goal from Erin Clare Cassidy and then a strike by Cramer tied the game at 11-11 with 4:35 to play.

Wright scored the game-winner with three minutes left in the game and R-MC was then able to hold off the Maroons in the last minute, including a save by keeper Lindsay Schabert on a free position chance with 35 seconds remaining.

Cassidy had a goal and four assists in the match. Lindsay Shabert had saves to lead the defense with the help of sophomores, Sarah Held and Jen Green, and senior, Margaret Fisher.

The Yellow Jackets will take on Sweet Briar College at 4:30 pm in Ashland on Friday for their second conference match-up.
