Second-Half Surge Fuels Fairfield Past the Mount

EMMITSBURG, Md. – Fairfield defeated Mount St. Mary's 13-9 in non-conference women's lacrosse action on Saturday.

Katelyn Catanese (Huntington, N.Y./St. Anthony's) paced the Mount (3-4) with four goals, including becoming the 14th player in program history to reach the 100-point plateau. Breana Waraksa (Media, Pa./Strath Haven) notched a career high in assists (4) and points (5) while Ashley Johnson (Avada, Colo./Arvada West) recorded a hat trick in the loss.

Kristin Coleman posted all four of her markers in the second half along with her first-half assist to fuel the Stags (4-1) to its second-straight win against the Mountaineers. Erin Rigby registered three tallies and a helper in the winning effort.

Fairfield gained the advantage going into the locker room, but it was a four-goal run in the second half that help the Stags to their fourth win of the season.

With the score tied at 6, Coleman scored unassisted to hand Fairfield the lead it would not relinquish at 33:27 before Nina Tedeschi assisted on her second tally of the afternoon 66 seconds later for an 8-6 edge. Abbey Goodwin converted an 8-meter shot at 36:43 before Mary Vallely found Tedeschi for her second goal of the season at the 37 minute mark for a four-goal advantage.

Catanese answered for the Mount St. Mary's unassisted at 40:28, but Coleman responded right back nine seconds later for Fairfield.

Johnson scored off a Waraksa helper at 57:10, but Coleman and Rebecca White each found the twine to increase the Stags advantage to 13-8 with 6:56 remaining.

Catanese capped her four-goal day with a free-position goal at 58:09, but the match ended with Fairfield earning a 13-9 victory.

The Mount opened the game scoring the first two tallies to grab a 2-0 edge. Catanese scored and notched her 100th point 31 seconds into the match before Waraksa started her career-high performance by assisting Catanese's second goal of the day at 2:40.

Fairfield answered to score the next three goals and grab a 3-2 edge. Rigby set up Goodwin at 6:29 before Rigby scored off an assist by Kylee Martin at 8:26 and off a helper by Coleman 15 seconds later.

After Waraka set up Rebecca Douglass (White Hall, Md./Towson Catholic) at 10:41, Cristin Lucena found the twine at 12:56.

The Mountaineers grabbed a 5-4 edge thanks to Kathleen Rossetti (Perry Hall, Md./Perry Hall) setting up Johnson at 16:46 and Waraksa notching her lone marker of the afternoon unassisted at 17:38.

The Stags came back with two scores to go into halftime with a 6-5 edge. Martin found the back of the net unassisted at the 27 minute mark and Rigby found the twine with 1:48 left in the stanza.

Johnson scored off a Waraksa helper at 31:50, but Fairfield scored the next four goals to take the lead for good.

Jane Karger (Pittsburgh, Pa./Hampton) recorded eight saves for Mount St. Mary's and Laura Chatnik turned away six shots in the win.

Catanese also had four draw controls and two ground balls while Jackie Kearney (Baltimore, Md./Seton Keough) registered three ground balls, three draw controls and a caused turnover for the Mount.

Mount St. Mary's returns to action on Thursday when the squad opens up its Northeast Conference schedule against Robert Morris. Game time is 3:00 p.m.
