Lions Dominate Dominican, 20-3, in Season Opener
Lakewood, NJ – After having their initial game postponed last week (3/7) vs. Mercyhurst College, the GCU Lacrosse team finally took the field for their first game of the '08 campaign on Saturday, resulting in a dominating 20-3 victory over visiting Dominican College.
The Lions (1-0) controlled the action for the entire game with Jill Hadfield (So.-Jackson, NJ/Monsignor Donovan) leading all scorers with five goals and five assists. Overall, eight different Lions scored goals on the day, including three apiece by Lauren Conaty (Fr.-Pt. Pleasant, NJ/Pt. Pleasant Boro) and Christine Flaherty (So.-Howell, NJ/Howell); two each by Allison Abbate (So.-Oceanport, NJ/Shore Regional), Shannon Mastrogiovanni (Fr.-Monroe Township, NJ/East Brunswick), Ryan McGrath (Fr.-Manasquan, NJ/Manasquan), and Laura Housel (So.-West Caldwell, NJ/James Caldwell); and one by Kara Sanford (So.-Pine Beach, NJ/Toms River South).
Silje Karlsen (Vernon, NJ/Vernon), Sara Kiernan (Saugerties, NY/Saugerties), and Jen Olin (Oceanside, NJ/Oceanside) provided the goals for Dominican College (0-3).
GCU faces an enormous test tomorrow (3/16), when the Lions travel to Long Island to play Division II powerhouse, C.W. Post, at 1:00 PM. The Pioneers are currently ranked #1 in the country.
