CHESTERTOWN, Md. –The Gettysburg College women's lacrosse continued its offensive explosion this spring with a dominating 18-6 Centennial Conference victory over host Washington (Md.) College on Saturday. The Bullets, ranked third in the latest Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) NCAA Division III poll, remain unbeaten with an 8-0 record, including 2-0 against conference foes.
Gettysburg is averaging 17.6 goals per game this season, well above its school record of 15.5 goals per game notched in 2003. The offensive explosion has come from a variety of sources and Saturday's contest against Washington (4-2, 0-1 CC) was no different as nine different Bullets tossed in a goal. Sophomore Hollis Stahl (Hightstown, N.J./Peddie School) did the most damage with four goals, while senior Krissy Browning (Baldwin, Md./Fallston) and sophomore Jessica Crane (Sudbury, Mass./Lincoln-Sudbury) each recorded hat tricks.
The Shorewomen opened with the initial goal just 1:15 into the contest and held the advantage for the opening six minutes. Gettysburg's barrage began with a goal by Browning at 23:51 and the onslaught continued over the next 13 minutes with Crane and Stahl each adding two goals, Browning tossing in one, and senior Jamie Giffuni (St. James, N.Y./Smithtown) capping the spurt with her second goal of the year at 10:26. Washington put home back-to-back goals to cut the margin to 7-3, but the Bullets scored six of seven goals in the final 6:58 to take a 13-4 lead at the half.
Stahl opened the second half with her fourth and final score of the afternoon to put the running clock rule into effect and Gettysburg pushed its lead out to 16-4 before a pair of Shorewomen goals. Freshmen Heidi Bitter (Darien, Conn./Westminster) and Sam Greenspan (Purchase, N.Y./Rye Country Day School) put the finishing touches on the win with goals in the final minute of play.
Senior Katie Ceglarski (Darien, Conn./Darien) and Crane each finished with five points on the day, the former picking up two goals and three assists. Ceglarski also led a 16-9 advantage on the draw by corralling seven draw controls. Browning added an assist for a four-point day and was perfect on both of her free position shot attempts. Giffuni dished out three helpers in addition to her lone goal and sophomore Lexie Hearn (Old Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich) posted a pair of goals.
