Bellarmine Stays Undefeated at Home, Tops Presbyterian
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Bellarmine lacrosse team topped Presbyterian today 16-5, running the Knights' record to 5-1 this season, including a perfect 4-0 mark at home. Presbyterian, which is in its first year of NCAA Division I competition, falls to 0-7 for the season.
Senior Matthew Holland (Victoria, British Columbia) led the Bellarmine scoring spree with two goals and three assists, for a career-high five points. Long stick middie Adam Lukanchoff (Niagara on the Lake, Ontario) also notched a career-high scoring day with three points (2 goals, 1 assist), while scooping up five groundballs.
Adam Gardner (Toronto, Ontario) added two goals to his team-leading 11 on the season, while John Kirk (Massapequa Park, N.Y.) and Derek Hopcroft (Toronto, Ontario) also notched a pair of goals in the win.
One game after securing 18 of 19 draws against Manhattan to help earn Great Western Lacrosse League Player of the Week honors, face-off man Bobby Snider (Calgary, Alberta) won 17 of 25 face-offs today.
Bellarmine dominated the first half. Jamie Floris (Niagara on the Lake, Ontario) got the Knights on the board first just over five minutes into the game, and Garnder added a second score just seconds later. Hopcroft would add a fast break goal giving Bellarmine a 3-0 lead.
Presbyterian finally scored with 2:45 left in the first period on Brian Foley's unassisted goal, but the Knights reeled of the game's next eight goals to put the contest away in the first 30 minutes of the game. Bellarmine held a 10-1 halftime lead. By midway through the fourth period that lead had increased to 15-3 before the Blue Hose scored twice in the final nine minutes.
Bellarmine goalkeeper Scott Bowles (Greensboro, N.C.) picked up his first collegiate win between the pipes, after earning the start nod, by turning away four shots.
The Knights killed all five of their penalties and out-shot their opponents 52-22. Geoff Griffiths (Markham, Ontario) nabbed a team-high seven groundballs.
Devin Pinkston scored three of the Blue Hose's four goals.
Next up for Bellarmine is a home date with Wagner on Tuesday, starting at 3:30 p.m.
