Binghamton Holds on to Defeat Sacred Heart

VESTAL, N.Y.-- Junior Chris Mulheron (Canandaigua, N.Y.) scored four goals and tallied a pair of assists, leading Binghamton (2-1) to a 9-8 win over Sacred Heart (3-1) in a non-conference men's lacrosse game on Saturday afternoon at the Bearcats Sports Complex. The win is the Bearcats' second in a row and comes against a Pioneer team that is currently receiving votes in the USILA Top 20 Weekly Poll.

Mulheron's four goals and six total points ties his previous career-highs, both of which were set against Vermont on April 8, 2006. He now leads Binghamton with five goals and seven points so far this season.

Mulheron struck again late in the third period, with two goals in a span of 22 seconds, putting Binghamton up 9-3 entering the final quarter. Both of those goals were unassisted.

The final 15 minutes, however, saw the visiting Pioneers stage a furious rally. Five different players scored, pulling Sacred Heart to within 9-8 with 36 seconds remaining. Sophomore attack Timmy Katz scored the second goal and assisted on the final two.

Despite winning just 8 of 20 draws, Binghamton won the last and most important faceoff of the game, which following Katz's final goal. The Bearcats then proceeded to run out the clock.

Junior goalie Larry Kline (Beverly, Mass.) made 10 saves, marking the third consecutive game he has posted 10 or more stops. He also scooped up a game-high and season-high seven ground balls.

Junior attack Jake Boyce (Pittsford, N.Y.) added a goal and an assist, extending his scoring streak to three games. Katz led Sacred Heart with two goals and two assists.

Binghamton outshot Sacred Heart 37-25 and killed off all four man-down situations. The Bearcats are now a perfect 11-for-11 in man-down situations this season.

The Bearcats head to Syracuse for a 3:30 p.m. game next Saturday, which will be aired by Time Warner in both the Binghamton and Syracuse areas. In the Binghamton area, the game will be carried on Time Warner Cable Channel 23.
