No. 7 Washington & Lee Tops No. 13 Mary Washington

LEXINGTON, Va. The seventh-ranked Washington and Lee womens lacrosse team used a five-goal spurt over an 11-minute stretch of the second half to give the Generals a 12-9 victory over No. 13 Mary Washington on Saturday afternoon at Watt Field.

W&L took a quick 2-0 lead in the opening 3:20 by goals from freshman midfielder Emily Mathews (Baltimore, Md./Bryn Mawr) and junior attacker Colleen Evans (Lexington, Va./Rockbridge County). UMW responded with two goals over the next 8:18 to knot the score, 4-4.

Freshman midfielder Wilton Megargel (Charlottesville, Va./St. Annes-Belfield) then tallied the first score of a three-goal run to give the Generals a 5-2 lead at 5:03. Goals from three different Eagles, including one from senior attacker Caitlin Erickson (Cypress, Texas/Cy-Fair) with two seconds left, would tie the contest, 5-5, at the half.

The Blue and White opened the scoring in the second half with two-unanswered goals to take a 7-5 edge, but Mary Washington retaliated with three of its own to assume its first lead of the day (8-7) at 22:42. However, W&L then used the aforementioned five-goal spurt en route to the triumph.

Washington and Lee (6-1) was led by Evans three goals and one assist, while senior attacker Laura Henson (Atlanta, Ga./Westminster) notched two goals and two assists. Senior midfielder Megan Slosson (Cockeysville, Md./Maryvale Prep) and Megargel also added two goals apiece. Senior goalkeeper Sarah Tilbor (West Simsbury, Conn./West Simsbury) played the entire contest in between the pipes and registered six saves.

Erickson paced the Eagles with four goals and two assists, while freshman midfielder Katie Wallis (Cypress, Texas/Cy-Creek) tallied two goals. Senior goalkeeper Meredith Deitrick (Mountain Lakes, N.J./Mountain Lakes) played all 60:00 minutes and stopped five shots.

Washington and Lee returns to action on Wednesday as it hosts ODAC-foe Roanoke for a 6:00 pm contest.
