Scranton Downs Susquehanna in Landmark Opener

SELINSGROVE, Pa.-The University of Scranton scored five times in the third period to break away from a one-goal lead at intermission en route to a 10-6 victory over Susquehanna University in the Landmark Conference opener for both teams Saturday afternoon.

Junior attacker Thomas Kornobis (Merrick, N.Y./W.C. Mepham) scored all three of his goals during a three-minute span in the second-half and added two assists for Scranton, now 4-1 for just the second time in school history and for the first time since 1996. Freshman attacker Kyle Frank (Glen Arm, Md./Boys' Latin) got the Royals rolling early by scoring all three of his goals in the first-half as Scranton settled for a 2-0 lead after the first period and 4-3 at intermission.

Susquehanna, now 2-2 overall and 0-1 in the Landmark Conference, was led by junior attacker Fred Morse (Rochester, N.Y./Pittsford-Sutherland) with two goals and junior attacker Greg Norris (St. Catharines, Ontario/Denis Morris), senior midfielder Greg Morris (Charlotte, NC/South Mecklenburg), junior attacker Sam Jayne (Alexandria, Va./T.C. Williams), and junior defender Collin Fadrowski (Ellicott City, Md./River Hill) added one apiece.

Scranton jumped out to a 3-0 lead behind two goals by Frank and one by junior attacker Nick Youngstrom (Vestal, N.Y./Vestal), who finished with two goals, early in the second period. The Crusaders then out-scored the Royals 3-1 over the final 11 minutes of the first-half to close the gap.

Youngstrom and freshman attacker J.P. Barton (North Brunswick, N.J./St. Joseph) sandwiched goals around one by Fadrowski before Scranton put it out of reach with three goals-one by freshman attacker Stephen Bruestle (Holland, Pa./Archbishop Wood) and two by Kornobois-over the final four minutes of the third period to take a 9-4 lead. Kornobis tallied his eighth goal of the season less than a minute into the fourth period to give Scranton its largest lead, 10-4, before Morse scored back-to-back goals in the final five minutes to set the final score.

Royal freshman goalie Jeremy Dowiak (Hackettstown, N.J./West Morris) stopped 13 of the 19 shots he faced while Susquehanna's Kirk Ryan (Wayne, Pa./Radnor) finished with a game-high 23. Scranton out-shot the Crusaders, 44-27, and held a 36-31 advantage in ground balls. Freshman midfielder Patrick Cefalu (East Islip, N.Y./East Islip) played a major role in Scranton keeping the Crusaders on defense throughout much of the afternoon by winning 16 of 20 face-offs. For the season, Cefalu is now 58 of 97 (59.7 percent) in face-offs.

In all four of its wins this season, the Royals have yet to allow more than six goals. Individually, Frank's three goals gives him a team-leading 15 on the season while Kornobis' three goals and two assists extends his team-leading point total to 25.

Scranton, which now holds a 6-3 lead in the all-time series with Susquehanna, will take on Medaille College of Buffalo, New York, in the first of a two-game Spring Break trip to Colorado Springs, Colorado, this Tuesday, March 18, beginning at 2:00 p.m.
