No. 6 Hamilton Deals No. 18 Nazareth First Loss
ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Sophomores Jennifer Young and Nora Davis each scored twice for the host Golden Flyers, but Nazareth was unable to stop Hamilton's balanced scoring attack. The Continentals received goals from nine different players to defeat Nazareth 14-6 in a non-conference game. With the loss, the 18th-ranked Golden Flyers fall to 1-1. Hamilton, ranked sixth nationally, remains unbeaten and improves its record to 2-0.
Anne Graveley and Nicole Tetreault each scored one goal in the first seven minutes of the game to give the Continentals an early 2-0 lead. Young answered for Nazareth with a goal on a free position shot to cut the Golden Flyers' deficit to 2-1 with 20:12 left in the first half.
Hamilton scored three consecutive goals spanning about five minutes to take a 5-1 lead with 8:20 remaining in the half. Audrey Nebergall, Sarah Bray, and Kaillie Briscoe each scored once for the Continentals.
The Golden Flyers responded with a goal from freshman Annalee Murphy with 7:18 left in the half. Murphy's goal, which cut Hamilton's lead to 5-2, was assisted by Young. The Continentals scored twice more before the end of the half to take a 7-2 lead at halftime.
After Briscoe tallied her second goal of the game for Hamilton, the Golden Flyers scored three of the next four goals to cut their deficit to 9-5. Young starting Nazareth's scoring run with her second goal of the game after a pass from freshman Michelle Cook. Sophomore Nora Davis scored Nazareth's fourth goal of the game followed by a goal from Cook to cap-off the Golden Flyers' scoring run with 12:36 left in the game.
The Continentals answered with two goals in less than a minute, which gave Hamilton an 11-6 lead. Davis scored her second goal of the game with 9:49 left in the second half to bring Nazareth to within four goals. However, the Continentals tallied three goals in the final 5:12 to secure the victory.
Junior goalie Maria Fusco made eight saves for the Golden Flyers while Kate Fowler made four saves in goal for Hamilton, which held an advantage in shots (27-12) and turnovers (15-11). Each team collected 10 ground balls while Nazareth won 13 of the 22 draw controls.
The Golden Flyers play their rescheduled game against Rochester March 20th in their next contest.
