Dugan and Gangl Lead Tigers Past Medaille
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Senior midfielder Tom Dugan and sophomore attacker Brendan Gangl combined for six goals and seven assists as Colorado College defeated Medaille College, 14-8, Saturday afternoon in the second game of the 6th Annual Colorado College Invitational at Washburn Field.
Dugan scored a career-high five goals, including three during a 9-1 run in the first half, as the Tigers (1-0) turned an early 1-0 deficit into a 9-2 halftime lead. Gangl set up five of those scores, including two by Dugan.
The Mavericks (0-1) made a game of it behind the efforts of freshman midfielder Brett Bridges and junior attacker Jeff Zacharias. Bridges scored a pair of goals and set up three more, while Zacharias scored twice as Medaille sliced CC's advantage to 10-8 with 12:01 remaining in the fourth period. But that was as close as the Mavericks would get.
After using its entire roster throughout the first three periods, the Tigers went back to their top two offensive lines for the final 15 minutes. Dugan and Gangl each had a goal and an assist as CC put the game away with a 4-0 run midway through the final period.
Freshman attacker Joe Boyle had three goals and an assist, while sophomore attacker Toby Cohen scored once and set up another score.
Freshman Max Pluss made five saves during the first half to earn the victory in his first career start. Classmate Scott MacArthur stopped three shots during the final 30 minutes.
Junior Ben Dlugosh stopped 15 of 29 shots for the Mavericks, who were outshot 49-28.
Kean University overcame a pair of three-goal deficits in the first half to defeat Mt. Ida College in the first game of the tournament.
Brett Conley scored twice and set up another score as the Mavericks jumped out to a 4-2 lead 32 seconds into the second period. Kean responded with a 5-1 run and grabbed its first lead with 7:38 remaining in the second period on a man-up goal by Scott Leathem.
The Cougars used 4-1 run in the third period to build a 10-7 lead with 13:04 remaining in the game and Mt. Ida was never able to get closer than two goals.
Leathem led KU with three goals and an assist, while Dennis Lukacsko had two scores and set up another. Dave Nichols had 15 saves for the Cougars, while Matt Vernick stopped 18 shots for the Mavericks. Conley had three goals and an assist to lead Mt. Ida.
Kean University (4-2) will face Medialle College at Sunday at 11:00 a.m. Colorado College will play host to Mt. Ida College (0-3) at 1:30 p.m.
