Canisius Women's Lacrosse Defeats Binghamton

The Canisius College women's lacrosse team won its second-straight game, defeating Binghamton Sunday afternoon at the Demske Sports Complex, 9-7. With the win, the Griffs improved to 2-3 on the season.

"It was a great and gutsy effort today," said Canisius head coach Scott Teeter. "We played right to the final buzzer. I thought our midfield unit played hard. We are starting to see more of the positives now."

Senior Lauren Walsh (Auburn, N.Y.) led the Griffs with three points on a goal and two assists. Sophomore Marissa Brown (Syracuse, N.Y.) and freshman Emily Maguire (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) each tallied a team-best two goals, while senior Whitney Card (Alton, Ontario), juniors Ashley Gray (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) and Chelsea Martinez (Bethpage, N.Y.) and freshman Taylor Gray (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) each added a goal for a balanced Canisius attack, which featured seven different scorers.

Freshman Allison Daley (Peterborough, Ontario) recorded five saves in goal to anchor a strong defensive performance by Canisius.

The Griffs started the contest strong, scoring four of the game's first five goals. Card opened the scoring 6:19 into the game and after Binghamton knotted the game, Canisius responded with three goals in a 1:38 span. Martinez started the run, scoring off a feed from Walsh. Brown then added her two goals to give Canisius a 4-1 advantage. After a Binghamton goal, the Griffs scored the final two goals of the half to head into intermission with a 6-2 advantage.

The Bearcats (3-5) would respond in the second half. The two teams traded goals to begin the second stanza and then Binghamton would net the next four goals to tie the game at seven. However, Walsh ended the Bearcats' run, scoring the game-winning goal with 11:03 left in the contest and Ashley Gray added an insurance goal with 9:20 left in the game as the Griffs earned their second victory of the season.

Canisius returns to action on Tuesday for a home tilt with Gannon. Game time at the Demske Sports Complex is set for 7 p.m.
