Buxton and Millar Lead Vermont Past Le Moyne

BURLINGTON, Vt. - Sara Buxton (Northfield, Ill.) and Kristen Millar (Whitby, Ontario) combined to score eight goals to lead the Vermont Catamounts past visiting Le Moyne, 15-11, in non-conference women's lacrosse action at Moulton Winder Field.

Vermont improves to 4-1 on the season, matching the best start under head coach Jen Johnson which came during the 2006 season. LeM oyne falls to 3-4 on the year.

"Despite a slow start we were able to rally and do what was needed to get a win," said Vermont head coach Jen Johnson. "There were some moments today where we didn't execute our game plan and Le Moyne capitalized on them. We had individuals step up to help us win this game, but we need to play with more of a total team effort. It's good to come off this stretch of games with two wins, but we need to improve in a few areas before we face Holy Cross on Wednesday."

The Dolphins and Catamounts traded pairs of goals over the first 20 minutes of action. Buxton's goal at the 22:45 mark, one of her three in the final eight minutes of the half, ignited a 4-1 spurt for Vermont to give the Catamounts an 8-5 advantage at the break.

In the second half the Dolphins scored four of the first five goals of the stanza to tie the game up 9-9, 46 minutes into the game. UVM answered with five consecutive goals to push out in front 14-9 with four minutes remaining. Le Moyne added two more tallies, but could not complete the comeback.

Michelle Phillips and Rebekah Elmer led the Dolphins with three goals each. Kylie Rosette picked up three assists for Le Moyne.

Senior Meaghan Hanley (Fort Pierce, Fla.) made eight saves, including a pair of big saves in the final 40 seconds, in the Vermont net. Alex Dwyer and Samantha Falcone combined to make five saves in the LeMoyne net.

Vermont returns to action on Wednesday (March 19) at Holy Cross. The game is scheduled to begin at 4:00 pm in Worcester, Mass.

GAME NOTES: Vermont completed a stretch of three games in six days with a 2-1 record. Kristen Millar continues to climb the charts in the Vermont record book, moving into third place all-time in points (140), sixth place all-time in goals (88), and increases her all-time leading mark in assists to 52. Millar also jumped to second place among the NCAA's all-time leaders in draw controls with six in today's game, she now has 207 career draw controls in 37 games, just 17 shy of breaking the all-time mark held by Gloria Lozano of Georgetown. Lozano totaled 223 draw controls from 2001-04 in 74 career games.
