Roanoke Falls to Catholic, 15-12
Salem, Va. -- The women's lacrosse team fell to Catholic, 15-12 at Donald J. Kerr Stadium on Sunday afternoon. The loss dropped the Maroons to 3-4 on the season, while the Cardinals improved to 5-2.
Roanoke outshot the Cardinals 25-24 and won the groundball battle, 38-27, but couldn't overcome an early, 10-5 deficit to suffer its fourth loss of the season.
Down by five in the second half, the Maroons got hot, scoring six of the next eight goals of the game to get within one, 12-11 with just over 11 minutes remaining.
Catholic proved to be too much for the Maroons as they sealed its fifth win of the season with three unanswered goals down the stretch. Brooks Laufman finished the scoring with :18 seconds with an unassisted goal for the final result.
Gina Valles had four goals and one assist to lead Roanoke. Cristen Sanfilippo finished with two goals, two assists and a team-best nine groundballs for the Maroons.
Kate Robinson led Catholic with four goals and seven groundballs. Meghan Sabo finished with three goals to pace the Cardinals.
Melissa Brashear finished with six saves for Catholic while Katlyn Scarlett had eight saves for the Maroons.
The women travel to Lexington, Va. to play against Washington & Lee in ODAC action. The Maroons dropped two games to the Generals last season, including a 10-4 loss in the ODAC Title Game. Game time is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
