No. 20 Denver Pioneers Run Past Colgate

DENVER – Junior Steph Coyne (Baltimore, Md.) had 10 points on a hat trick and seven assists, helping the No. 20 University of Denver women's lacrosse team triumph over Colgate 20-14 at Barton Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

Coyne's seven assists tied the DU single-game record, which was originally set by Kristie Leggio against Harvard last season. In two games this week, Coyne had 19 points with a hat trick in each game and a combined 13 assists.

Coyne's 25 assists this season already place her fourth on Denver's single-season list, trailing her own total from last year of 30. Leggio holds the top two spots with 44 assists last season and 37 in 2006.

Denver (4-3) also received six points from sophomore Ali Flury (Arnold, Md.) off five goals and an assists, as well as five points each from sophomore Lexi Sanders (Greenwood Village, Colo.) and freshman Tulley Stapp (Denver, Colo.), who each scored four goals and added an assist.

"I was very impressed with the performance of our bench players," said head coach Liza Kelly. "I thought Tulley had a great game."

The Raiders (2-5) were led by Jess Van der Meul, who had five points off four goals and an assists, while Brie Moran added four goals.

The Pioneers play their second of three games this week at Barton Stadium when they face Marist on Monday at 4:00 p.m.

DENVER (3/16/08) - The Colgate women's lacrosse team dropped the first game of its spring break trip, 20-14, to No. 19/20 Denver on Sunday, Mar. 16, at Barton Stadium. The loss pushes the Raiders' record to 2-6 overall this season, while the Pioneers improve to 3-3 on the year.

Senior tri-captain Jessica Van der Meulen (Liverpool, N.Y.) paced Colgate's offense with four goals and an assist for five points. Sophomore leading scorer Brie Moran contributed another four goals, and freshman Kate Bergstrom (San Francisco, Calif.) added two goals and an assist. Junior tri-captain Ashley Didio (Syracuse, N.Y.) posted a goal and two helpers, while juniors Molly Carroll (Swarthmore, Pa.) and Nancy Clayton (New Canaan, Conn.) along with sophomore Meghan Lawler (Liverpool, N.Y.) all netted one goal each.

Denver's offense was paced by Ali Flury, who scored five goals and also had an assist, and Steph Coyne, who was part of 10 scores with three goals and seven helpers. Tulley Stapp and Lexi Sanders each added five points, including four goals, while Karen Morton had two goals and an assist.

Denver raced out to a 3-0 lead within the first 2:20 of the game before Van der Meulen got the Raiders on the board. But before the contest was 12 minutes old, the Pioneers held a 6-2 advantage. That's when Colgate scored four straight to knot the score at 6-6, and the teams traded goals until the scoreboard read 8-8. However, Denver scored the last five goals of the half, including one at the buzzer, to take a 13-8 lead at the break.

The Pioneers continued to pour on the offense in the second half, as Morton gave DU a 14-8 lead 4:22 into the session. Moran scored back-to-back goals to pull Colgate back to within four, 14-10, but Denver scored five of the next seven to blow open a 19-12 advantage. The Raiders scored twice within the final five minutes before the Pioneers tacked on their 20th of the afternoon with one minute on the clock.

Raider junior goalkeeper Sara Drexler (Pottstown, Pa.) posted eight saves in the loss. Becky Childs started the game for Denver, and earned the win after making four stops. Katie Gold registered five saves on nine shots in relief over the last 22:40.
