Princiotto Leads #2 Maryland Past #15 Johns Hopkins

BALTIMORE, MD - The #2 Maryland Terrapins used runs in the first and second half to defeat #15 Johns Hopkins 16-8 on Monday afternoon at Homewood Field. The Blue Jays slip to 2-4 on the season while the Terps improve to 7-1 overall. Senior Lauren Schwarzmann (Sykesville, MD/Century), who had missed the last four games due to illness, scored two goals in her return.

Katie Princiotto bookended a game-opening 4-0 run by Maryland, before senior Kirby Houck (Baltimore, MD/Garrison Forest) potted a free position goal to put Hopkins on the board. The Terps answered with another 4-0 run as Ali Perkins assisted on three of the four for Maryland. With 2:55 and trailing 8-1, sophomore Sam Schrum (Pasadena, MD/St. Mary's) put an end to the run with her ninth of the season. Schrum broke around the Maryland defense, took a pass from sophomore Brett Bathras (Severna Park, MD/Severn School) and buried it past Allie Buote to make it 8-2. Schwarzmann then capitalized on a free position shot with just four seconds remaining before the half.

Coming out of the half, Schwarzmann scored her second of the day on a free position shot just 2:39 in. Sarah Mollison answered for the Terps just over a minute later, scoring off a restart after a Blue Jays foul. Houck cut the deficit to four goals when she dodged the left alley and scored her team-best 12th of the season. Schrum followed with her second of the day off a crisp pass from Bathras with 21:05 to play. Maryland responded with six straight over the next 19 minutes to push out to a 15-6 lead. Sophomore Kim Dubansky (Baltimore, MD/McDonogh) and freshman Brianna Cronin (Arlington, MA/Arlington) scored back-to-back goals just 32 seconds apart to make it a 15-8 game with 1:28 to play, before Brittany Jones scored for Maryland to account for the final score.

Freshman Julianne Wisner (Parkton, MD/Notre Dame Prep) got the start in goal and played 47:31 while making seven saves. Sophomore Lizzie O'Ferrall (Baltimore, MD/Mount De Sales) came on in relief and made one save. Buote finished with seven saves for the Terps.

Hopkins returns to action on Saturday, March 22 against Oregon. The game will played at La Costa Canyon High School in San Diego, CA. It is the Blue Jays first road game since February 26. Game time is slated for 1:00 pm PST.

BALTIMORE, Md. -- Senior Katie Princiotto recorded a career-high five goals to lead the No. 2 Maryland womens lacrosse team to a 16-8 win against No. 15 Johns Hopkins on March 17 at Homewood Field. Classmate Kelly Kasper added a goal and four assists to go along with four draw controls.

Senior Dana Dobbie chipped in with a hat trick while sophomore Ali Perkins tied her career high with three assists that all came in the first half. Senior Allie Buote was credited with seven saves in the win.

Maryland jumped out to a huge lead for the second-straight game as it started the afternoon with an 8-1 run. The Terps offense worked efficiently while the defense kept the Blue Jays out of sync, only allowing three goals in the first half with two of them coming on free positions.

The first two goals came 14 seconds apart as Princiotto and senior Casey Magor used identical moves from the right side of the cage, wrapping shots past the goalie in the third minute.

Sophomore Caitlyn McFadden added the third goal when Kasper found her open in front of the cage. Kasper then assisted on Marylands fourth goal after she was taken down making a run towards goal. On the ensuing free position, Kasper dished to Princiotto to her left who scored the goal.
