15th-Ranked Cortland Downs Rochester, Evens Record
ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Sophomore Jessie Fritz (Baldwinsville/C.W. Baker) scored four goals for the fourth consecutive game to lead the nationally 15th-ranked Cortland women's lacrosse team to a 13-7 victory over host Rochester Tuesday afternoon. The Red Dragons improved to 2-2 with the win, while the Yellowjackets fell to 0-1.
Junior Danielle Torre (Massapequa) had a season-high three goals and an assist, junior Meghan Gallagher (Long Beach) tallied a career-best three goals and senior Rachel Cornwell (Fairport) added a career-high five points on a goal and four assists for Cortland. Senior Jen Pacifico (Sachem) netted a goal and freshman Megan Clare (Shirley/ William Floyd) scored her first career goal in the win. Sophomore goalie Deanne Abell (Fulton/G. Ray Bodley) made 11 saves.
For Rochester, juniors Abby Woodward (Pittsford/Pittsford Sutherland) and Lindsay Dakin Henrietta/Rush Henrietta) each scored two goals, and junior Sierra Laventure-Volz (Pittsburgh, PA/Winchester-Thurston) recorded a goal and an assist. Junior goalie Leslie Dube (Skaneateles/ Marcellus) registered 18 saves.
The Yellowjackets took the early lead on sophomore Danielle Mondro's (Concord, NH/Bishop Brady) goal less than five minutes into the game. Cortland responded by closing out the half with six straight goals, including three consecutive by Torre. Gallagher and Clare scored 63 seconds apart to open the second half for an 8-1 Red Dragon lead, but Rochester tallied the next three goals to make it an 8-4 game.
After Pacifico netted a free-position goal at the 12 minute, 56 second mark, Dakin scored back-to-back goals to cut the lead to 9-6 with 7:16 remaining. The Red Dragons answered with a four-goal run to take command of the game, 13-6, with 1:32 on the clock. Woodward's goal with 49 seconds completed the scoring.
