Colgate Hangs on to Beat Marist

DENVER, Colo. (3/19/08) - Sophomores Brie Moran (Little Silver, N.J.) and Meghan Lawler (Liverpool, N.Y.) each recorded five points to lead the Colgate women's lacrosse team to a 15-12 win over Marist on Wednesday, Mar. 19, at Barton Stadium in Denver. The Raiders improve to 3-6 overall this season, while the Red Foxes drop to 2-3 on the year.

Colgate led by as many as eight goals, 14-6, just over the midway point of the second half, but Marist clawed its way back into the game, scoring six of the last seven goals of the contest. However, the Raiders were able to hold on for the three-point victory.

The Red Foxes opened the game on a 3-0 run, before Colgate countered with a trio of goals to knot the score at 3-3. Marist took its last lead of the game, 5-3, 16:50 into the first half before the Raider offense kicked into high gear. Colgate closed out the first half with six straight goals, and added a seventh 59 seconds into the second half. Marist's Lindsey Diener broke the Raider run, but Colgate continued to pour on the offense with another four goals over the next 10 minutes.

Moran and Lawler were among nine Raiders to find the back of the net versus the Red Foxes. Junior tri-captain Ashley Didio (Syracuse, N.Y.) had two goals and an assist, and freshman Colleen Bubnack (Syracuse, N.Y.) also netted two goals. Senior Jessica Van der Meulen (Liverpool, N.Y.) posted a goal and an assist, while senior Lindsay Pittard (Skaneateles, N.Y.), junior Nancy Clayton (New Canaan, Conn.), sophomore Katie Holland (San Diego, Calif.), and freshman Kate Bergstrom (San Francisco, Calif.) all contributed a goal to the winning effort.

The Red Foxes' offense was paced by Ali Carnabuci, who had six goals and an assist. Diener finished with four goals and a helper.

Colgate junior goalkeeper Sara Drexler (Pottstown, Pa.) earned her third win of the season after making eight saves. Marist's Liz Burkhard posted 10 stops in the loss.

Colgate outshot Marist, 32-27, including 19-11 in the first half. The Raiders picked up 20 groundballs to the Red Foxes' 15, but Marist earned the edge on draws, 15-14.

The Raiders return to Upstate New York to host first-year varsity team Navy in their inaugural meeting as Patriot League rivals. The game is scheduled for Saturday, Mar. 22, at 1:00 p.m., at Tyler's Field.
