Catamounts Fall to Crusaders in Women's Lacrosse

WORCESTER, Mass. - Nikki Bolduc scored five goals and totaled nine points to lead the Holy Cross Crusaders to a 13-11 victory over Vermont in women's lacrosse action on Wednesday afternoon. The victory was the first of the season for the Crusaders who improve to 1-6, while the Catamounts fall to 4-2 on the year.

UVM held a 4-1 lead in the first seven minutes of the game on goals by four different players. Holy Cross' Katie Gardner scored two goals in 14 seconds apart to trim the lead to one with 18:18 left on the clock. Kristen Millar (Whitby, Ontario) and Sara Buxton (Northfield, Ill.) scored two more goals for Vermont to give the Catamounts a 6-5 lead with 13:25 remaining in the half, but the Crusaders scored four consecutive goals, three from Bolduc, to close the stanza and took a 9-6 advantage into halftime.

Vermont scored three straight goals to open the second half, including a pair by Alison Haigh (Northborough, Mass.) to knot the game up 9-9 with 21:39 left in the game. The Crusaders scored three more times in a three-minute span to push out in front, 12-9, with 16:02 left. Freshman Megan MacDonald (Wayland, Mass.) and Millar scored back-to-back goals to bring UVM within one, 12-11, with 7:34 remaining, but the Catamounts couldn't complete the comeback. Gardner tacked on her third goal of the afternoon with 58 seconds left for insurance.

Millar finished the game with a team-high four goals, while Haigh added a hat trick and Buxton scored a pair.

Senior Meaghan Hanley (Fort Pierce, Fla.) played 20 minutes in the Vermont net and made four saves and was relieved by sophomore Ali Trainor (Severn, Md.) who made five saves in 39 minutes of action.

Gardner added two assists to go along with her three goals for Holy Cross. Teammate Kristine Corkum also registered a hat trick for the Crusaders. Amy Martin made 15 saves in the Holy Cross net.

Vermont returns to action on Saturday (March 22) when it travels to Stony Brook for an America East Conference contest. The game is scheduled to begin at 12:00pm.

WORCESTER, Mass. - Senior tri-captain Nikki Bolduc (Exeter, N.H.) scored five goals and had two assists, while freshman goalie Amy Martin (Bloomfield, Mich.) made 15 saves as the Holy Cross womens lacrosse team defeated Vermont, 13-11, on Wednesday afternoon in non-conference action in the home-opener at the Hart Turf Field. With the win, the Crusaders improve to 1-6 overall, while the Catamounts fall to 4-2 overall.

Bolduc leads the team this season with 13 goals, four assists and 17 points. Sophomore Katie Gardner (Garden City, N.Y.) had three goals and two assists for five points, while senior Kristine Corkum (Ipswich, Mass.) netted three goals. Senior Kelly Winslow (Wrentham, Mass.) and freshman Meg OLeary (Longmeadow, Mass.) each scored one goal.

Vermont was led by Kristen Millars four goals, while Alison Haigh had three goals and Sara Buxton had two.

The Catamounts jumped out to a 2-0 lead before Bolduc scored to make it a 2-1 game. After Vermont scored two straight goals, the Crusaders answered back with two goals by Gardner. Her first goal came on a free position shot. The Catamounts then increased their lead to 5-3, but Corkum and OLeary tied the game at 5-5. OLearys goal was assisted by Bolduc. After Buxton gave Vermont a 6-5 advantage, the Crusaders scored four unanswered goals to take a 9-6 lead into the half. Bolduc scored with an assist by Gardner at 11:25 and then scored again at 9:19, while Corkum netted her second goal of the game with 2:29 left on the clock. Bolduc scored her fourth goal of the contest with an assist by Gardner with 1:28 remaining in the half.
