Tigers Overcome Six-Goal Deficit to Defeat Goucher
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The Colorado College women's lacrosse team added to its history of amazing comebacks on by outscoring Goucher College, 15-6, over the last 45 minutes to post a 15-12 victory under the lights at Washburn Field.
The Tigers (4-2), who set an NCAA Division III Tournament record last year by overcoming a 9-0 deficit against No. 18 Nazareth College, trailed 6-0 against the Gophers when senior attacker Emily Blatter scored the third of her six goals 15:01 into the first half.
Sophomore midfielder Kristin Rider finally put CC on the board with 13:33 to play, then sophomore attacker Marisa McGrann and junior attacker Alexa Dougherty scored in a span of eight seconds to cut the Goucher lead in half. Sophomore attacker Holly McHugh scored late in the half to cut the deficit to two goals after 30 minutes.
The Gophers (1-4) appeared to re-gain control of the game when Blatter scored twice in a three-goal spurt to open the second half, but senior attacker Mallory Newton scored twice as Colorado College ran off five consecutive goals to tie the game at 9-9 with 14:06 to go.
Junior midfielder Marlo Tersigni gave Goucher an 11-9 lead with 10:40 remaining when she scored a pair of unassisted goals, but the Tigers answered with six consecutive goals to put the game away.
McGrann, Rider and senior midfielder Amanda Howard put CC back in front when they rattled the Gopher cage three times in 20 seconds. After McGrann scored on a free-position shot, Rider and Howard converted off draw controls to stun the Goucher defense and give the Tigers a 12-11 lead they would not give up.
Freshman attacker Gioia Garden, Newton and Howard all scored while Colorado College was working the clock, extending the Tigers' lead to 15-11 with 20 seconds left in the game. Blatter finished the scoring with 11 seconds left.
Junior Jess Van Doren made seven saves for the Tigers. Junior Brittany Foster had 22 saves for the Gophers, who were outshot 47-24.
Colorado College will travel to Southern California this weekend for West Region games against the College of Wooster and University of Redlands.
