Skidmore Wins Third Straight, 11-6 over Hartwick
Saratoga Springs, N.Y.-- Matt Levesque (Duxbury, Mass.) scored three goals and had two assists to lead the Skidmore College men's lacrosse team to an 11-6 win over Hartwick College in a steady rain Wednesday night at Wachenheim Field. The win is the third straight for the 4-1 Thoroughbreds, while the Hawks fall to 2-3.
Hartwick took its only lead on Chris Vogler's (Lynnfield, Mass.) goal at 13:42 of the first. Skidmore scored the next four, with Levesque scoring two and setting-up another. Vito DeMola (Holtsville, N.Y.) got one back for Hartwick at 2:49.
The teams traded goals to open the third with Ben Cornell (Natick, Mass.) scoring from Levesque at 7:16 and DeMola answering at 4:59 to make it 5-3. Cornell gave the Thoroughbreds a 6-3 halftime lead at 2:13.
Hartwick opened the third quarter with a goal by Steve Caramello (Duxbury, Mass.) at 12:18. Both teams traded chances until Tom Levesque (Duxbury, Mass.) scored at 4:26 from Nick Coppola (Basking Ridge, N.J.) and again at 1:01 from Jon Bubier (Yarmouth, Maine) to make it 8-4 at the end of three.
DeMola got the Hawks back to within three, 8-5 at 13:11 of the fourth, but that's as close as the Skidmore defense would let Hartwick get.
Coppola finished with two goals and two assists, Tom Levesque had four ground balls to go along with his two goals. Defenseman Scott Grillo (Wellesley, Mass.) had a game-high six ground balls.
DeMola led the Hawks with three goals. and three groundballs.
Skidmore goalie John Capitani (Garden City, N.J.) had nine saves and five ground balls. John Meade (Ocean Beach, N.J.) stopped 10 shots for Hartwick.
The Thoroughbreds are at Amherst College on March 25.
