Warner, Castellan Lead Vassar Past Roger Williams

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (March 18, 2008) -- Freshman Sarah Warner (Ipswich, MA/The Waring School) scored the game winning goal with 6:39 remaining, lifting Vassar's women's lacrosse team to its third straight win, 11-9, over a stubborn Roger Williams team. Playing in frigid and windy conditions at Marist College, the Brewers improve to 3-0 on the season, while Roger Williams suffers its first loss and is now 3-1.

Vassar will put its unbeaten record on the line next Wednesday, March 26, at Manhattanville College.

Warner, who scored four goals in the game, led a late second half surge for the Brewers, scoring three straight goals, as Vassar attempted to distance itself from a Roger Williams team that kept answering every Brewers offensive assault with its own. Warner scored Vassar goals No. 9, 10 and 11, all coming in a six minute span of the second half, from 11:21 to 5:41 remaining.

Roger Williams set the tone early, getting a goal from junior Jackie Criss (Westwood, MA/Westwood) just 49 seconds into the game. Vassar answered with four straight goals, three of which came from senior Christine Castellan (Media, PA/Pencrest) and the other from sophomore Jennie McAllister (Bayshore, NY/Bayshore), for a 4-1 lead.

A goal by Warner with 12:16 to play and a free position goal at 10:34 by junior Katama Martellucci (Montclare, PA/The Hill School) pushed the Vassar lead to 6-2, but Roger Williams scored four straight goals, two coming from freshman Clare Halliday (Trenton, NJ/The Hun School) along with a halftime tying goal, making the score 6-6 with eight seconds remaining, courtesy of freshman Nicole Papasergiou (Sea Cliff, NY/North Shore).

Roger Williams took its first and only lead, 7-6, 90 seconds into the second half when Criss notched her second goal of the game past Vassar goalie Ariel Nelson (Greenlawn, NY/Harborfields). Nelson always steady in net, made 14 saves on the night.

Castellan answered for the Brewers, tallying her four goal of the game and 11th of the season, firing a shot past Roger Williams sophomore goalie Amanda Magee (Columbus, NJ/Northern Burlington), tying the game a 7-7. Magee made 12 saves in the game. Castellan now has 148 goals in her career, 14 behind the 162 goal record set by Ali Fantl (2004-07).

That would be the last time both teams were even. Vassar freshman Mo Byrne (Lindenhurst, NY/Lindenhurst) provided the Brewers with a huge momemtum goal and an 8-7 lead. It was the first of four straight goals for the Brewers, leading to an 11-7 cushion. Roger Williams made the game interesting by scoring the next two goals, but none past the 3:48 mark.

Two of Vassar's 11 goals were assisted by sophomore Liz Pacheco (Dresher, PA/Mount St. Joseph's Academy).
