Freshmen Tally Seven Goals to Lead Rutgers by Hobart

PISCATAWAY, N.J. (March 21, 2008) – Three Scarlet Knights recorded three-goal games, including two freshman, as the Rutgers men's lacrosse team picked up a 13-10 ECAC win over Hobart College Friday evening at Yurcak Field.

Rutgers (2-3, 1-1 ECAC), which matched its season-high with 13 goals, got three scores each from sophomore Gerhard Buehning (Essex Fells, N.J.) and freshmen Kory Kelly (Princeton, N.J.) and Brian Shemesh (Hillsborough, N.J.). Kelly, the current ECAC Rookie of the Week, has scored six goals over the last two games and has tallied three goals in a game on three occasions this season.

Hobart (3-3, 0-2 ECAC) had four players score two goals apiece, including senior attackman Daryl Veltman, who also added an assist for the Statesmen. Veltman has produced seven points in his last two outings.

The Scarlet Knights started the game hot as they netted the contest's first four goals. Sophomore Justin Pennington (Flemington, N.J.) had the first RU score, his ninth of the season, while Kelly capped the 4-0 run with back-to-back goals. The Statesmen would respond though, as they scored the first three goals and four of the five scores in the second quarter to go into halftime down by one at 5-4.

RU would bump the lead back to two on Kelly's third goal of the night to start the second half scoring flurry, but Hobart immediately responded with a goal by Veltman. Shemesh, who came into the game with one goal on the year, began his second half scoring spree with a tally at the 4:38 mark in the third quarter to improve RU's lead to 7-5. Buehning would score the Scarlet Knights' next two goals, spanning the final two quarters to give RU a three goal lead. Hobart would get no closer than three the rest of the way.

Rutgers now holds a 3-2-1 edge in the all-time series against Hobart. The Scarlet Knights will be back in action Tuesday when they travel to No. 11 Princeton at Powers Field in Princeton, N.J. The game is set for a 7:00 p.m. start time.
