No. 6 Gannon Blasts Ninth-Ranked Queens
ERIE, Pa. - The Gannon women's lacrosse team scored 10 of the last 11 goals and blasted Queens (N.C.) 20-8 in a match-up of nationally-ranked teams Friday night at a cold Gannon University Field. Gannon entered the match ranked sixth in NCAA Division II, while Queens was tabbed ninth.
Gannon looked to be blowing the match wide open early on, scoring the first seven goals of the match. Taryn Millerd (Shortsville, N.Y./Midlakes) and Mary Eshenour (Waterloo, N.Y./Waterloo) scored two goals each during the 7-0 blitz in the first 18:06.
Queens rallied with three of the final five goals before halftime and went to the break trailing 9-3. The Royals then cut the deficit to 10-7 with four of the first five scores in the second half. Kelley Duffy's third goal of the match with 19:31 remaining capped the rally.
However, Millerd silenced the rally with her third goal of the evening at the 18:45 mark. It started a 5-0 run in which five different players scored. Queen momentarily stop the bleeding with a goal at the 9:25 mark, but the Lady Knights iced the victory with the contest's final five goals.
Eshenour led the Gannon offense with seven goals. Colleen Dixon (Lafayette, N.Y./Lafayette) recorded four goals and two assists. Millerd posted three scores while Antonia Cianfrocco (Chittenango, N.Y./Chittenango) and Sarah Belen (Oak Hill, Va./Oakton) added two goals each.
Kayla Nelson (Oswego, N.Y./Oswego) and Christina Blasi (Pittsburgh, Pa./Seton-LaSalle) completed the scoring with one goal apiece. Nelson dished out a team-high four assists.
Shauna Hutchinson (Islip Terrace, N.Y./East Islip) started the match in goal, making four saves while allowing seven goals in 40:29. Acacia Cook (Clay, N.Y./Clay-NS) turned away three shots and allowed one goal in 19:31 of relief action.
Gannon improved to 4-1 with Friday's victory. Queens dropped to 5-2. The Lady Knights return to action Monday, March 24 against Division I Niagara at Gannon University Field. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m.

(March 21, 2008) – At the half, the No. 9 Queens University of Charlotte women's lacrosse team trailed No. 6 Gannon University 9-3 and came within three with 19 minutes remaining in the game until the Golden Knights went on a 10-1 scoring run to defeat the Royals 20-8 on Friday night in Erie, Pa.
The Royals (5-2 overall/3-1 Conference Carolinas) trailed by seven with a little over 10 minutes to play in the first half when Sarah Hannon (Sykesville, Md./Liberty) scored the first Royals goal of the game with an assist from Kelley Duffey (New Hope, Minn./Cooper).
Amanda Martin (Geneva, N.Y./St. Bonaventure University) tallied her second goal of the season unassisted four minutes after Hannon's.
Duffey provided her second assist of the game to Amanda Mahle (Baltimore, Md./Bryn Mawr School) for the third and final Queens' goal in the half.
Gannon's (4-1) offense totaled 16 shots in first 30 minutes and forced Royals' goalie Rebecca Markle (Hampstead, Md./North Carroll) to make five saves. Queens took 10 shots in the half.
Queens bounced back to start the second half scoring four goals in five minutes and only giving up one to trail 10-7. Duffey notched three of the four goals with Hannon scoring the other.
The Golden Knights quickly cooled any thoughts of a Queens comeback scoring five goals to open the lead up 15-7.
