No. 1 Duke Knocked off by No. 10 Georgetown

The top-ranked Duke men's lacrosse team fell for the first time this season on Saturday afternoon, dropping an 11-7 decision to 10th-ranked Georgetown in front of 2,412 fans in Washington, D.C. The Blue Devils fall to 8-1 on the year while the Hoyas improve to 4-2.

Georgetown scored three goals in the first four minutes of the game with Todd Cochran, Andrew Baird and Chris Schuville finding the back of the net. Duke responded late in the period when Ned Crotty fed Zack Greer for a tally to trim the lead to 3-1.

To begin the second period, the Hoyas were penalized for an illegal stick, but the Blue Devils were unable to take advantage of the three minute penalty. Max Quinzani got rolling for the Duke offense, netting three straight goals to push the Blue Devils ahead by a 4-3 mark with his unassisted tally at the 2:16 mark of the second quarter.

Matt Danowski, who assisted on two of Quinzani's three goals, sent Duke to halftime on a high note with a transition goal with just two seconds remaining before intermission. After each team fired nine shots in the opening 15 minutes, Duke held a 13-2 advantage in the second quarter.

The third period saw the Hoyas pull within one at 5-4 on an extra-man goal from Craig Dowd at the 13:23 mark, but Duke responded with an unassisted goal from Brad Ross to give the Blue Devils a 6-4 advantage. Georgetown then received two goals from Ricky Mirabito as the Hoyas tied the score at six all heading into the final period.

To begin the fourth period, Danowski was whistled for illegal equipment and Georgetown converted the man-up opportunity on a tally by Andrew Brancaccio to put the Hoyas ahead 7-6. Brendan Cannon then tallied a goal to increase Georgetown's advantage to two at 8-6. With 7:54 left in the game, Danowski rifled home a shot from 16 yards out to convert a man-up opportunity for the Blue Devils and trim Georgetown's lead to one at 8-7. The Hoyas closed the game with three goals in the final 4:07 to preserve the win.

Quinzani paced Duke with three goals while Danowski finished with two goals and two assists. With his four points, Danowski increases his career total to 298 to move past former Cornell standout Mike French into sixth place on the NCAA's all-time scoring chart. He also became just the 15th player in NCAA history to register 150 assists in a career.

Greer had one tally on the day to move into 10th place by himself on the NCAA's all-time goals list with 164. The Blue Devils fall to 46-5 when Greer scores at least one goal. In goal, Duke's Dan Loftus posted 10 saves while Georgetown's Miles Kass recorded 18 saves. Cannon led the Hoyas with two goals and three assists.

Duke returns home to take on Harvard on Tuesday night at 7:00 p.m.
