Buckeyes Fall in Double Overtime to No. 13 UMBC

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State men's lacrosse team suffered its third loss of the season, all in overtime, falling to No. 13 UMBC, 12-11, Saturday in Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium in Columbus. Buckeye senior tri-captain Kevin Buchanan had a team-best four goals and five points in the game, while junior Peet Poillon had two goals and three points, Josh Funk scored twice and Joel Dalgarno added two assists.

The Buckeyes led, 9-7, at the end of the third quarter but the Retrievers scored the first three goals of the fourth quarter to tie the game and take the lead. The Buckeyes tied the game nine seconds after UMBC took the lead at 3:17. The teams traded goals again to close out regulation, with Ryan Smith tallying for UMBC at 2:34 and Buchanan scoring for Ohio State at 1:47. The squads were unable to score through the first overtime. Ohio State came close, as a shot went off the crossbar, but the game went to a second overtime. UMBC's Matt Latham scored with 2:24 remaining in the second OT to lift the Retrievers to the win.

The Buckeyes fall to 4-3 this season and end their winning streak at three. UMBC now is 4-3 and has back-to-back overtime wins.

The teams combined for seven goals in the first quarter, with Ohio State leading, 4-3, at the end of the quarter. UMBC's Kyle Wimer opened the scoring at 13:21. The Buckeyes went on a four-goal run over the next 3:05 to push their lead to three (4-1). Jeff Ryan found Buchanan at 12:32, followed by Funk's fastbreak goal at 12:16. Poillon added a goal at 10:28 and Buchanan set up Doug Ruhnke at 9:27. The Retrievers followed with a three-goal run to tie the game. UMBC scored the last two goals of the first quarter, with Smith tallying at 2:10 and Latham scoring 16 seconds later.

UMBC carried its momentum into the second quarter, as Terry Kimener scored 1:59 into the second quarter (13:01), knotting the score at 4. Buchanan put the Buckeyes ahead (5-4) with a man-up goal, assisted by Poillon, at 10:15. Smith tied the game at 5-all 45 seconds later (9:30). Funk added his second goal of the game with 4:21 left in the half, sending the Buckeyes into the lockerroom with a one-goal lead (6-5).

The Buckeyes scored three of the first four goals of the second half to go ahead, 9-6. Poillon scored with 13:49 left in the quarter. Alex Hopmann scored for the Retrievers at 8:13. Dalgarno set up the next two goals, passing to Buchanan at 6:47 and Ryan at 4:20. UMBC then went on a four-goal run, starting with a goal by Latham with 12 seconds remaining in the third quarter.

UMBC scored the first three goals of the fourth quarter, as Kimener scored at 8:06, Hopmann tallied at 4:22 and Wimer scored at 3:17, putting the Retrievers ahead, 10-9. Buckeye senior Chris Friel tied the game at 10 with his first goal of the year at 3:08. Smith responded for the Retrievers at 2:34 to regain the lead, but Ruhnke found Buchanan for a score at 1:47 to again knot the score (11-all).

The Buckeyes were assessed a 30-second penalty with 5 seconds remaining and the defense held UMBC scoreless on the advantage, as it carried into the first overtime. Ohio State had all four shots of the first overtime, but could not find the back of the net, with three shots wide and one that went off the crossbar. UMBC scored on the first and only shot of the second overtime, when Chris Jones set up Latham for the winner at 2:24.

UMBC outshot Ohio State in the game, 33-28. Senior goalie Stefan Schroder had eight saves in the game, while UMBC's Jeremy Blevins had five stops. Ohio State was 1-for-2 on extra-man chances and stopped the Retrievers on two opportunities.
