Holy Cross Defeats Bucknell

WORCESTER, Mass. - Seniors Nikki Bolduc (Exeter, N.H.) and Kristine Corkum (Ipswich, Mass.) each recorded four goals and one assist, while sophomore Katie Gardner (Garden City, N.Y.) had three goals and three assists as the Holy Cross womens lacrosse team defeated Bucknell, 16-6, on Saturday afternoon in Patriot League action at the Hart Turf Field.

With the win, the Crusaders have won two in a row and improve to 2-6 overall (1-2 Patriot League), while the Bison fall to 2-3 overall (1-2 Patriot League).

Gardners three assists and six points are career best marks, while her three goals tie a career best. Senior Kelly Winslow (Wrentham, Mass.), sophomore Ali Baird (Wilbraham, Mass.), sophomore Kaitlyn Curley (New York, N.Y.), freshman Annie Boylan (Andover, Mass.) and freshman Meg OLeary (Longmeadow, Mass.) each scored one goal, while senior Amy Archambault (West Hartford, Conn.) added two assists.

Bucknell was led by Bonnie Buechels three goals, while Sarah Collins, Alison Heffernan and Laura Van Schaack each scored one.

The Crusaders jumped out to a 1-0 lead with a goal by Gardner off an assist by Archambault, but Buechel then scored two straight goals to give Bucknell a 2-1 advantage. Gardner then tied the game at 2-2, while Bolduc and Boylan scored to make it a 4-2 game. Gardner netted her third goal of the game off a pass by Corkum and then Corkum scored a goal of her own to give Holy Cross a 6-2 lead. After Heffernan made it a 6-3 contest with a free position goal, the Crusaders scored three straight times to make it a 9-3 game with goals by Bolduc, Winslow and Baird.

Archambault assisted on Bolducs game-winning goal, while Gardner had assists on the goals by Winslow and Baird. After a goal by Bucknell, Bolduc scored the last goal of the half as Holy Cross took a 10-4 lead into intermission.

Holy Cross scored the first six goals of the second half for a 16-4 lead. Bolduc started the half with a goal off a free position shot, while OLeary scored of an assist by Bolduc. Corkum then had a free position goal followed by Bolducs fourth goal of the game. Corkum then scored again, while Curley scored her first goal of the season as Gardner earned her third assist of the afternoon. Corkums fourth goal of the game with 7:56 left on the clock was Holy Cross final goal as the Bison scored the last two goals for the 16-6 final score.

Holy Cross freshman goalie Amy Martin (Bloomfield, Mich.) made eight saves and allowed four goals in the first 57:57, while sophomore Allison Donovan (Saco, Maine) stopped one shot in the final 2:03. Alyssa DeLorenz made eight saves for Bucknell. The Crusaders outshot the Bison, 37-17, while Holy Cross went 2-4 on free position shots and Bucknell went 1-1.

The Crusaders return to action on Thursday, March 27, when they host Siena at the Hart Turf Field at 4:00 p.m.

LEWISBURG, Pa. -- Four goals each from Kristine Corkum and Nikki Bolduc propelled Holy Cross to a 16-6 Patriot League victory over Bucknell on Saturday afternoon. Bonnie Buechel (South Orange, N.J./Columbia) scored a season-high three goals for the Bison, who fell to 2-3 overall and 1-2 in conference play.

The two-time defending Patriot League champs outshot the Bison 37-17 and erased an early 2-1 deficit with an 8-1 run in the first half. Holy Cross (2-6, 1-2) led 10-4 at the half, then outscored Bucknell 6-0 in the second half until the Bison scored twice in the final 47 seconds of the game.

Buechel scored two goals in a span of 1:54 to give Bucknell the 2-1 lead, but Katie Gardner scored less than a minute later to tie the game at 2-2. Bolduc's goal and 19:54 gave the Crusaders the lead for good.

Alison Heffernan (Malvern, Pa./Agnes Irwin) scored on an 8-meter shot to bring the Bison within 6-3, but the Crusaders scored four of the last five in the half to take control.

Sarah Collins (Goldens Bridge, N.Y./John Jay) and Laura Van Schaack (Winnetka, Ill./New Trier) also scored goals for Bucknell. Goalie Alyssa DeLorenz (Garland, Texas/Plano East) made eight saves.

Next up for Bucknell is a non-conference road game at La Salle on Tuesday at 6:00 p.m.
