Strong Second Half Helps #7 Hoyas Top Rutgers

Washington, D.C. – The seventh ranked Georgetown University women's lacross team broke open a tie game at halftime with seven second half goals as the Hoyas improved to 2-0 in BIG EAST play with an 11-5 win over visiting Rutgers on Saturday afternoon. Georgetown ups its record to 7-1 overall.

The Blue and Gray trailed 1-0, 2-1 and 4-3 before tying the game at 4-4 with 4:15 to go in the first half.

The Hoyas scored three times in the opening seven minutes of the second half to take a 7-4 advantage and never looked back.

“We worked to win a lot of the hustle plays and ground balls in the second half,” said GU head coach Ricky Fried. “We were able to hold Rutgers to just eight shots after halftime which allowed us to control the tempo.

“7-1 is a good place to be in the middle of the season,” Fried added. “We have a young group and I think we're learning how to win. Our staff is having a lot of fun coaching this group.”

Sophomore Ashby Kaestner (Trappe, Md./Saints Peter and Paul) scored a game-high four goals for the Hoyas while classmate Molly Ford (Reisterstown, Md./Notre Dame Prep) went for three goals and an assist. Freshman Jordy Kirr (Baltimore, Md./Bryn Mawr) dished out two more assists and now has 20 on the year.

Georgetown outshot the Scarlet Knights 31-18 for the game.

Sophomore goalie Caitlin Formby (Towson, Md./Notre Dame Prep) made six saves to go along with three ground balls.

WASHINGTON, D.C. (March 22, 2008) – The Rutgers women's lacrosse team battled No. 7 Georgetown to a 4-4 tie at half-time but was outscored 7-1 in the second half and fell 11-5 on Saturday afternoon in Washington, D.C. RU (3-5, 1-1) lost for the first time in four games while Georgetown (7-1, 2-0) won its second consecutive contest.

Rutgers got on the board first as Mary Cryan (Newtown Square, Pa.) tallied her 12th goal of the season on Meghan Flanagan's (Medford, N.J.) 11th assist of the year. The Hoyas scored three of the next four goals to take a 3-2 lead, the RU score coming from Brooke Cantwell (Moorestown, N.J.). But after freshman Marley Welsh (Jarretsville, Md.) scored two consecutive goals to give the Scarlet Knights a 4-3 lead, Georgetown answered back with a goal of its own, sending the game into half-time tied at four.

The Hoyas offense came to life after the break as they scored seven consecutive goals to take an 11-4 lead. Junior Mallory Tornetta (Frazer, Pa.) stopped the scoring streak with a goal in the 49th minute, but RU could not get the ball in the net again and Georgetown held on to win 11-5. GU was led by sophomore Ashby Kaestner, who finished with four goals.

“We definitely came out on fire in the first half,” said head coach Laura Brand. “We were playing the best defense we've played all season, Sandra Abel (Monrovia, Md.) was having a great game and the offense was capitalizing on opportunities. In the second half we had a few calls not go our way that resulted in goals and we didn't regroup, and Georgetown took advantage of us being down.”

Abel posted a season-high 15 saves, one shy of her career-high, in the loss. The junior has posted 10 or more saves in six of the team's eight games and has already passed her season total of last year (67) with 85 saves so far in 2008.

The Scarlet Knights return to action on Monday, March 24, when they take on non-conference opponent Old Dominion in Norfolk, Va., at 3:00 p.m.

“We just have to move on and prepare for our next game,” said Brand. “It will be a good battle and a physical game, Old Dominion is a very tough opponent. We have to get our heads back into the game and play well on Monday.”
