Southern New Hampshire Tops Bentley

WALTHAM, Mass. – Sophomore Carole Lee (Derry, N.H.) scored five goals and freshman Sherry Darrell (Bow, N.H.) had a seven-point game as Southern New Hampshire came back from a two-goal deficit for an 18-15 win over Bentley on Saturday afternoon in Northeast-10 Conference women's lacrosse action. The win boosted the Penmen to 2-0 in the conference and 3-2 overall, while the Falcons fell to 1-3 overall and 0-2 in NE-10 play.

Junior All-America Alyssa Ritchie (North Andover/North Andover HS) scored a career-best seven goals in defeat for Bentley, while sophomore Jaclyn Griffin (Barrington, Ill./Barrington HS) chipped in with four goals and two assists.

The game was a back-and-forth affair throughout with Southern New Hampshire jumping to an early 3-0 lead before the Falcons came back to tie the game at four when Ritchie scored with 14:05 to go in the first half. That was part of a string of four straight goals that gave Bentley a two-goal lead and the Falcons remained in front until halftime, taking a 7-6 lead into the break after Lee scored with seven seconds left in the opening frame.

After Ritchie scored to open the second half, the Penmen put five straight on the board with a pair from junior Laura Rotolo (Waltham, Mass.) staking Southern New Hampshire to an 11-8 lead with 25 minutes to play. Bentley chipped away at that lead until a streak of four unanswered goals shifted the lead back to the Falcons by a 14-12 margin with 13:35 on the clock.

The Penmen put together the final comeback, though, outscoring Bentley by a 6-1 margin for the remainder of the game. Southern New Hampshire drew even when Darrell set up junior midfielder Elizabeth Parent (Hinesburg, Vt.) for a goal with 12:43 to go and took the lead on another Parent tally almost four minutes later. Junior Jennifer Parro (Ipswich) converted a free position shot for the Penmen before senior Bridget Fitzgerald (Winchester/Winchester HS) brought the Falcons back within one with 6:31 to go.

That was the last bit of offense Bentley could muster, though, and a pair of goals from Rotolo and Darrell 15 seconds apart put the game away for Southern New Hampshire. Rotolo scored four goals in the contest, while Parent had three goals and three assists.

Junior Katie Clark (Norwich, Conn.) made 12 saves between the pipes to earn the win for the Penmen as Southern New Hampshire had a 36-34 edge in shots and put 29 attempts on goal compared to Bentley's 27.

The Falcons are in action again on Tuesday, hosting Bryant at 7:00 p.m.
