Second Quarter Burst Carries Kenyon in Home Opener

GAMBIER, Ohio A big second quarter lifted the Kenyon College men's lacrosse team to victory in its home opener in chilly Gambier Saturday afternoon. The Lords scored six times in a three-minute span in the second frame to spur a 15-7 win over Adrian College.

Kenyon held a 5-0 lead when freshman David Clarke (Ashburnham, MA/Cushing Academy) began the scoring barrage with an unassisted goal at the 6:57 mark. Junior Devin Catlin (Charlottesville, VA/Western Albemarle) fired a shot into the back of the net 37 second later, then set up senior Noah Flessel (Berkeley, CA/Berkeley) with 6:01 on the clock. Sophomore Jordan Zimolka (Bay Shore, NY/Bay Shore) got into the act with an unassisted score at the 5:26 mark. Catlin added another score 43 seconds later, and assisted on the Lords' final goal of the half with 3:54 left in the second quarter. When the dust settled, the Lords led comfortably, 11-3, at halftime.

The flurry of activity helped Kenyon gain a 45-33 shot advantage over Adrian for the game. However, defense regained control on both sides of the field in the second half as the Lords and Bulldogs scored just four times each over the final 30 minutes. Junior goalie David Page (West Chester, PA/St. Andrews (DE)) turned back thirteen Adrian shots to pick up the win in net.

Catlin and Flessel each posted big afternoons for Kenyon, which improved to 3-1 with the victory. Catlin tallied nine points courtesy of four goals and five assists and Flessel found the back of the net three times. Senior Nate Pritchard (Narberth, PA/Lower Merion) tacked on two scores and picked up eight groundballs.

The Lords return to action Tuesday afternoon at St. Vincent College to make up last week's postponed game.
