Tenth-Ranked Haverford Stops Hampden-Sydney
ALEXANDRIA, VA (March 15, 2008) - Tenth-ranked Haverford College enjoyed a 7-0 scoring run from the 1:29 mark in the first quarter until 9:51 remaining in the third period to break open a tie game and cruise to a 12-6 win over Hampden-Sydney on Saturday afternoon at Episcopal School in Alexandria, VA.
The Tigers were led by junior midfielder Doug Carpenter (Baltimore, MD/St. Paul's) who managed four goals in the loss. Seniors Mark Miller (Esmont, VA/Monticello) and Will Ashwell (Warrenton, VA/Notre Dame Academy) accounted for one goal apiece to round out the Tigers' offensive efforts. Haverford placed nine different players in the scoring column and were led by attackman Max Hjelm's three goals. The Tigers drop their third straight during a tough stretch and fall to 2-4, while Haverford improves to 5-1.
The match was dominated by defense in the early stages with neither team able to muster a shot in the first several minutes of action. Hjelm and Haverford struck first, however, with 7:16 to play in the opening frame with Hjelm adding a second goal under one minute later to propel the Fords to a 2-0 advantage.
The Tigers answered back with two consecutive goals of their own, the first by Miller and the second by Carpenter, to even the score at 2-2 with 3:35 remaining in the first quarter. However, the Hampden-Sydney offense went cold, and Haverford was able to capitalize, scoring the next seven goals of the contest to grab a 9-2 lead midway through the third period.
After Carpenter's second goal of the afternoon brought the Tigers within 9-3, Haverford's Dean Granoff and Mike Distler pushed the Fords' advantage to eight, 11-3, with back-to-back goals. Another Carpenter strike on a man-up opportunity with 19 seconds to play in the third re-established a seven goal deficit at the end of the period.
Hampden-Sydney registered the first two goals of the final stanza to draw within 11-6, but Fords' goalie Jake Mendlinger made several impressive saves to keep the Tigers at bay for the final 9:55 of play. Haverford added one more goal to account for the final 12-6 margin.
The Tigers out-shot Haverford 41-31, but scooped three fewer ground balls (36-33) and struggled on face-offs, winning just 8-of-22 opportunities.
Hampden-Sydney will try and reverse their fortunes next Saturday, March 29 when it hosts Messiah at Fulton Field at Lewis C. Everett Stadium. Face-off is scheduled for 1:00 pm.
