Visiting Ursinus Upends Franklin & Marshall

LANCASTER, Pa. – Eric Farris and Justin Reinke each tallied three goals, while Tony Aquilino made nine saves to lead Ursinus over Franklin & Marshall 11-8 in Centennial Conference (CC) men's lacrosse action on Saturday.

Farris scored on two man-up opportunities and Reinke struck back-to-back goals to help the Bears (4-3, 2-0 CC) take a 6-1 lead early in the third quarter and hold on for their second conference win.

Sean Oliver (Wilton, CT/Wilton) led the Diplomats (4-2, 0-1 CC) with three goals, while Mark Hild (Denver, CO/Denver East) added a goal and assisted on three others.

Down 7-2 in the third quarter, F&M scored the next five out of seven goals to get within two with 5:46 remaining in the game. Oliver and Peter Moon (Durham, NC/Durham Academy) scored a goal apiece less than a minute to start the rally. Shane Brennan (West Chester, PA/Haverford School) assisted Moon on the extra-man goal.

Farris put Ursinus ahead 8-4 with his third goal, but Oliver took advantage of an Ursinus penalty at the 11:36 mark of the final quarter and John Short (Chapel Hill, NC/Durham Academy) finished off a pass from Hild to make it 8-6.

Just when the Diplomats got close, the Bears found a way fire back. Just 14 seconds after Short's goal, Reinke struck again to keep a three-goal lead. Hild found Brendan Kearney (Alexandria, VA/Bishop Ireton) two minutes later, but Derrin Mangin scored immediately after the face-off for the 10-7 edge.

Both teams exchanged one more goal, with Ursinus getting the final one with 18 seconds left to defeat F&M for the second straight year.

The Diplomats held a 12-10 advantage in face-offs and 30-29 edge in shots. Chris Marcozzi (Springfield, PA/Malvern Prep) recorded eight saves in the net and Brett Leppert (Baltimore, MD/John Carroll) added a goal for F&M.

The Diplomats return to action on Wednesday at Swarthmore. Game time is 7:00 p.m.

LANCASTER, Pa. – The Ursinus College men's lacrosse team broke open a 1-1 tie with Franklin & Marshall by scoring five straight goals in a 11-8 win over the Diplomats (4-2, 0-1 Centennial) Saturday afternoon.

For Ursinus (4-3, 2-0 Centennial), sophomore attack Eric Farris (Pottsgrove, PA/Pottsgrove) and senior attack Justin Reinke (Setauket, NY/Ward Melville) scored three goals on the afternoon, while senior midfielder Dane Mangin (Willow Grove, PA/Archbishop Wood), sophomore long stick midfielder Derrin Mangin (Willow Grove, PA/Archbishop Wood), sophomore attack Dan Monzo (Collegeville, PA/Spring Ford), freshman midfielder Pat Gillen (Merrick, NY/Calhoun) and junior attack Jason Patterson (West Chester, PA/Unionville).

Dane Mangin also added in two assists, as Ursinus has now won two straight.

Farris opened up the scoring with a man-up goal with 7:54 left unassisted for a 1-0 lead. Sean Oliver then scored for the Diplomats, to tie the score at 1-all.

The Bears started the five-goal scoring run with 35 seconds left as Dane Mangin scored on a Pat Nagle assist to make the score 2-1. Patterson scored his lone goal of the game with 10:57 left on a Farris assist for a 3-1 Ursinus lead. Reinke then scored back-to-back goals to give the Bears a 5-1 advantage. His first came with 6:54 left on a Dane Mangin assist, the second came with 13 seconds left on a pass from Dan Monzo.

In the start of the second half, Farris scored another man-up goal on an assist from sophomore Tom Walsh to give the Bears a 6-1 advantage.

After the Diplomats got a goal, Gillen scored his goal unassisted at 7:29 left for a 7-2 Ursinus lead.
