Offense Comes Alive as UMass Downs Boston College

AMHERST, Mass. - Kaytlin McCormick and Kathleen Typadis each tallied four goals each as the UMass women's lacrosse team defeated Boston College 13-10 on Saturday afternoon in McGuirk Stadium. It was a special day as both teams played to benefit the Friends of Jaclyn Foundation and honored their adopted little sisters, Lexie Williams and Judith Theriault, prior to the game. UMass held an 18-to-7 advantage on draw controls and shot a season-best 6-for-8 on free position shots to pull out the win.

The Minutewomen improve to 2-6 on the season and snapped a six-game losing streak with the win. Boston College falls to 2-5 on the year.

Along with McCormick and Typadis, Merritt Cosgrove (1g), Jeanette Villapiano (2g), Haley Smith (1g, 1a), and Stephanie Hopkins (1g) each scored goals on the day.

Jenna McCabe and Lauren Fitzpatrick each netted hat tricks with three goals each for the Eagles. Lauren Costello scored a goal and added three assists in the loss.

Boston College took an early two goal lead before the Minutewomen scored four consecutive goals to take a 4-2 lead with 20:44 remaining in the first half. After Haley Smith scored her first goal of the season on a free position shot, BC scored three goals to tie the game 6-6 with just over seven minutes remaining. Typadis scored her third goal of the first half with 3:25 remaining to give UMass a 7-6 lead going into halftime.

McCormick took over to start the second half scoring three straight goals. She tied her career-high with her fourth goal of the game to give UMass an 11-8 lead with 17:26 remaining in the game. Both teams traded goals to close out the game. UMass was able to regain possession with 2:40 left in the game and ran out the rest of the clock.

The Eagles held a 28-to-27 shot advantage and a 16-to-12 edge in groundballs. Free position shots were a major factor for UMass who converted 6-of-8 on the day to just 2-for-5 for Boston College.

UMass will return to action on Tuesday afternoon when the Minutewomen host New Hampshire at McGuirk Stadium (3:00 pm). Admission is free to all.

Amherst, Mass. – Boston College fell, 13-10, to Massachusetts on Saturday afternoon. The Eagles dropped to 2-5 on the season, while the Minutewomen improved to 2-6. Junior captain Jenna McCabe and sophomore Lauren Costello led the team with four points each.

McCabe scored the first two goals to put the Eagles on top in the first five minutes of the game. UMass netted four straight scores to take the lead. With 19:21 to play in the first half, junior Lauren Fitzpatrick recorded an unassisted goal to pull BC within one.

The Minutewomen went back up three off goals by Kathleen Typadis and Haley Smith, but the Eagles tied the game when Fitzpatrick nailed two in a row, followed by a McCabe goal. All three scores were assisted by Costello. With 3:25 to go, Typadis netted her seventh goal of the season to put UMass up one heading into halftime.

UMass's Kaytlin McCormick netted three consecutives goals to start the second stanza and give the Minutewomen the their largest lead of the day. Junior Peyton Killeen converted a free position shot and Costello scored her only goal of the game to bring the Eagles back within striking distance with 22:40 left to play.

It would be the closest the Eagles would come as the Minutewomen scored three more times before time expired. Freshmen Jull Rekart and Kaitlyn Horsman each recorded goals before the horn sounded.

Shots were almost even, as the Eagles tallied 28 to the Minutewomen's 27. BC recovered 16 ground balls while UMass picked up 12, but the Minutewomen controlled 18 draws to BC's seven.

Freshman goalie Sheila Serafino played 9:16 and gave up four goals. Junior Katie Monaghan played the remaining 50:44 and made five saves. Junior Emily Hannigan led the team with four caused turnovers.

The Eagles will play crosstown rival Boston University on Wednesday, March 26 at 4:00 p.m. at the Terrier's home field.
