Gendron Strikes in OT to Lift Bentley Over Bryant
WALTHAM, Mass. – Senior Beth Gendron (Tyngsboro/Tyngsboro HS) scored the lone goal in overtime to lift Bentley to a 17-16 win over Bryant on Tuesday night in Northeast-10 Conference women's lacrosse action. The Falcons improved to 2-3 overall and 1-2 in conference play with the win, while the Bulldogs evened their record at 3-3 overall with a 1-1 league mark.
After Bentley erased a three-goal deficit in the final eight minutes of regulation, the game was tied at 16 headed into the extra frame. As the first of the two three-minute overtime sessions was winding down, junior All-America Alyssa Ritchie (North Andover/North Andover HS) caused a turnover and the loose ball was picked up by freshman Leigh Tedeschi (Duxbury/Duxbury HS). On that possession, Bentley got the ball to Gendron, who drove in to score unassisted. The Falcons held on to the one-goal lead with sophomore goalie Christina Guglielmo (Fair Haven, N.J./Rumson-Fair Haven HS) turning aside both shots she faced in overtime.
Ritchie led the Falcons with five goals and added two assists. Gendron, Tedeschi and senior Liz Goddard (Acton/Acton-Boxborough HS) each recorded hat tricks, while junior Kim Morris (Saratoga Springs, N.Y./Saratoga Springs HS) tallied three assists.
Bentley jumped out to an early lead, scoring the first three goals before Bryant even had a possession. Once the Bulldogs touched the ball, though, they came charging back, scoring four unanswered goals to take a one-goal lead. Ritchie struck to tie the game again and the score remained tight for the next 15 minutes before a pair of goals from Ritchie kicked off a string of four straight Falcon tallies to give Bentley a three-goal lead. Bryant got a free-position shot from junior Lauren Albert (South Windsor, Conn.) in the final minute of the first half to make it an 11-9 Bentley lead at the break.
The Bulldogs came out strong in the second half and tied the game back up just over five minutes into the second. Only a goal from Ritchie interrupted a sequence of six Bryant tallies that lasted midway through the second half. Tedeschi scored to bring Bentley back within two, but was answered by a free-position shot by sophomore Eliza Demarseilles (Branford, Conn.) to make it a 16-13 Bryant lead with just under nine minutes to play. That was the last goal the Bulldogs scored as the Falcons got scores from Tedeschi and Gendron before sophomore Jaclyn Griffin (Barrington, Ill./Barrington HS) netted the equalizer with 1:06 on the clock to send the game to overtime.
The Falcons are in action again on Saturday, traveling to Manchester, N.H., to face Saint Anselm at 1 p.m. The team returns home on Wednesday, April 2, to face NE-10 rival Stonehill, ranked third in the nation, at 7:00 p.m.
