Hamilton Upsets No. 10 Geneseo on Late Goal
CLINTON, N.Y. -- Franke Holiber '10 scored four goals, including the game-winner with 1:46 to play, and host Hamilton College defeated nationally ranked No. 10 SUNY Geneseo, 8-7, in a non-league men's lacrosse game at Campus Road Athletic Field on March 26.
Christian Kunhardt '10 made 15 saves to give the Continentals (3-2 overall) a chance at the upset. Kunhardt also registered a game-high six ground balls. Hamilton's Justin Williams '10 scored twice, and Andy Simon '09 posted a goal and an assist. The Blue Knights (4-1) were led by two goals from Mike Pizzuto '08 and one goal and one assist each from Dylan Bittlingmaier '09 and Craig Lange '11.
The teams were tied at halftime, 4-4, when Geneseo replaced starting goalie Eddie Watts '09 with Dennis Costanza '10. Watts finished with three saves, while Costanza had six.
Hamilton scored the only goal of the third quarter when Marc Albu '08 scored off an assist from Stephen Lefebvre '11 with 11:30 left. Holiber put the Continentals ahead by two 2 minutes, 20 seconds into the fourth quarter off an Austin Deyo '09 assist.
Geneseo answered with back-to-back goals to tie the game again. Pizzuto scored unassisted on a man-advantage opportunity with 10:25 to play. Joe Malach '08 then scored off Lange's assist at 7:43.
Hamilton answered quickly as Williams scored just 37 seconds later off Simon's assist. The Blue Knights responded to tie the score again with 6:03 remaining when Tom Costanza '09 scored off Bittlingmaier's assist.
That set the stage for Holiber's heroics, as the sophomore scored unassisted on a mid-range shot from the left side. Holiber is tied for the team lead with seven goals and eight points.
Geneseo was 1-for-2 with the man-advantage, while Hamilton was 0-for-2. The Blue Knights outshot Hamilton, 29-24. Hamilton held the edge in ground balls, 31-27. Geneseo won 10 faceoffs to the Continentals' nine. The Blue Knights were 16-for-24 in clear attempts, while Hamilton was 14-for-20.
This was Hamilton's first win against Geneseo in seven tries. The teams hadn't played since 1975.
