Garnet No Match for Top-Ranked Franklin & Marshall

SWARTHMORE, Pa. - The top ranked Franklin & Marshall Diplomats (7-0, 3-0 CC) women's lacrosse team remained undefeated as they beat Swarthmore (4-5, 0-2 CC) 19-3 in Centennial Conference action on Thursday at Clothier Fields.

After a 10-0 run by Franklin and Marshall in the first half Swarthmore finally got on to the board when Marissa Schaffer '09 (Moreland Hill, Ohio / Laurel School) scored her 13th goal of the season off a fee position. The first half ended with the Diplomats leading 12-1.

The Franklin & Marshall offense continued to dominate on the field well into the second half pushing their lead to 19-1 before Swarthmore sophomore Abbe Muller (West Hartford, Conn. / Conard) scored an unassisted goal with 7:03 on the clock. Garnet attackman Amy Vachal '11 (Somerset, N.J. / Rutgers Prep) completed the back-to-back goals when she ran down the field after picking up the draw control to score at 6:04 making the score 19-3.

The Swarthmore goalies split the game playing one half each, senior Susannah Blair (Princeton, N.J. / Princeton Day) picked up three saves during the first half, while Allison Grein '10 (Floral Park, N.Y. / Floral Park) stopped one shot and caused one turn over.

The Garnet will continue their Centennial Conference play when they host Dickinson on Saturday, March 29 for a 1:00 pm contest.

SWARTHMORE, Pa. – Nine different players scored, including three with hat tricks to lead No. 1 Franklin & Marshall past Swarthmore 19-3 in Centennial Conference (CC) women's lacrosse action on Thursday night.

Jen Pritchard (Media, PA/Penncrest) netted a pair of goals and tied a career high with 11 draw controls to lead the Diplomats (7-0, 3-0 CC) to their seventh straight win. Shannon Summers (North Wales, PA/The Hill School) tallied a game-high six points with two goals and four assists.

The Garnet recorded three goals on nine shots, getting a goal and three draw controls from Amy Vachal.

Only 1:13 after the opening whistle Summers netted her 15th goal of the season off a good F&M clear for a 1-0 lead. Blake Hargest (Cockeysville, MD/St. Paul's School for girls) scored off a pass from Sarah Meisenberg (Severna Park, MD/Severn School) at the 26:51 mark, before Laura Ruppersberger (Baltimore,MD/St. Paul's School for Girls) grabbed the ground ball off a saved shot and found the back of the net to make it 3-0.

The fourth goal came immediately after the draw control won by Pritchard and Allison Solomon (Damascus, MD/Academy of the Holy Cross) buried her shot past Susannah Blair at the 23:33 mark.

Ashley Bevington (Schwenksville, PA/The Hill School) and Pritchard struck 41 second apart with the first on a free-position goal and the latter off a pass from Summers to make it a six-goal game.

Bevington got her second goal of the game (19th of the season) and then found Meisenberg for an 8-0 lead with 13:47 remaining in the first half.

The Diplomats netted two more goals thanks to Pritchard and Summers before Marissa Schaffer converted a free-position attempt at 10-1. Ruppersberger and Hargest each scored off back-to-back draw controls won by Pritchard for a 12-1 lead at halftime.

The second half brought seven additional goals for F&M and two for Swarthmore. Bevington, Hargest and Meredith Lussier (Radnor, PA/Radnor) each finished with three goals. Lidia Sanza (Cockeysville, MD/St. Paul's School for Girls) tallied four stops for the Diplomats.

F&M returns to action on Saturday in a rematch of the national championship game at No. 2 Salisbury. Game time is 1:00 p.m.
