Veltman Breaks Another Record in Hobart Win at Fairfield
The Fairfield University men's lacrosse team dropped its fourth straight game, falling 12-4 to ECAC Lacrosse League foe Hobart College on Lessing Field. The Stags fall to 3-4 overall and 1-2 in ECAC play, while the Statesmen improve to 4-4 on the year and 1-2 in league action.
Hobart scored first seven minutes into the game, on a Nick Currie goal, and would score the games first nine goals. The Statesmen led 5-0 at the intermission and 0-9 when Matt Smalley put home a goal with 11:36 left in the third quarter.
Fairfield's offense broke through with 10:35 to play in the third quarter as Dan Boudreau put home his fifth goal of the year, from a Kevin Peters pass. Hobart tallied the next two goals, at 4:54 and 4:11 to extend the lead to 10 goals, 11-1. The Stags would score three of the final four goals of the game, with Doug Kuring netting a goal with 2:55 remaining in the third quarter. Kuring would score again with 30 seconds to play and Grant Devilbiss would score six seconds later to wrap up the scoring.
Matt Scanlon picked up a game-high five caused turnovers for the Stags, who held a 15-11 advantage in that category. Matt Petre and Jeff Cilente each had six ground balls for the Stags, who finished with 37. Cilente made 10 saves in his second career start.
Hobart was led by the three goals and one assist of Daryl Veltman. Currie, Doug Shiver and Jeff Colburne each tallied a pair of goals. Max Silberlicht played the first 54:14 in goal for the Statesmen, earning the win, making nine saves and allowing two goals. Brad Hester made four saves, allowing two goals, in the final 5:46.
Fairfield allowed Hobart to go just 1-6 in man-up chances. On the flip-side, Fairfield was good on 1-4 extra man opportunities.
Hobart out shot the Stags 38-30 for the game, while also picking up more ground balls, 46-37. Fairfield committed fewer turnovers, 29-28, in the contest, while each team won 10 face-offs. The Stags cleared 25-35 in the contest, with Hobart being successful 22-26.
The Stags will be back in action on Tuesday, April 1, when they travel to Vermont for a non-conference contest.

FAIRFIELD, Conn.-Hobart College senior attackman Daryl Veltman (Salisbury School/Coquitlam, B.C.) broke the Statesmen Division I career points record in a 12-4 ECAC Lacrosse League win over Fairfield this afternoon. He notched three goals and an assist to raise his total to 146, three more than previous record-holder Nate Hill '05.
Senior attackman Jamie Kirk (Salisbury School/Orangeville, Ontario) added three points (1-2) to the winning effort, while junior attackman Jeff Colburn (CNS/Liverpool, N.Y.), senior midfielder Nick Currie (Corning East/Corning, N.Y.), and sophomore midfielder Doug Shiver (Delbarton/Morristown, N.J.) chipped in two-goal efforts. Senior midfielder Sean Murphy (Bishop Timon-St. Jude/Buffalo, N.Y.) and junior midfielder Matt Smalley (Avon Old Farms/Cumberland, R.I.) rounded out Hobart's scoring with a goal and an assist apiece.
The Statesmen defense shutout the Stags (3-4, 1-2) for more than 34 minutes, marking the first time the Hobart has carried a shutout into the second half since blanking Lehigh for nearly 40 minutes on March 13, 2004.
Sophomore goalie Max Silberlicht (New Hartford/New Hartford, N.Y.) earned the win, stopping nine of the 11 shots he faced, while junior Brad Hester (Woodbridge/Woodbridge, Va.) turned back 4 of 6 in about six minutes of relief work.
Junior defenseman Ricky Evans (Immaculate Heart/Watertown, N.Y.) collected a career and game-high seven ground balls for Hobart (4-4, 1-2). As a team, the Statesmen picked up a season-high 46 GBs against 37 for Fairfield.
